Hi guys, i'm new to this forum...
I recently bought new e6600 core duo cpu, gigabyte ds3 mobo rev 3.3, 4 gig corsair ram, and
an 6800 ultra graphics card. Other parts i used off my old computer, and i don't think they are relevant now...

So, i installed Vista Ultimate X64 on my new machine. The problem is that although it sees 2 cores in device manager, i can't see a second core in task manager, and by how computer is working it doesn't appear to be used at all... i tried putting one graph per cpu, but no avail...
and like i said, i am lost now. I can't seem to figure what is wrong here??

Did anyone have a similar problem?? What can i do? How can i get Vista to use second core?
I can't really think of anything right now... any help would be appreciated.
I put a lot of $$ in this comp... COULD this core be defective or what? Help wanted...:(

Thanks in advance

Herm... Ummm perhaps install windows XP and see if it regognizes both cores in that. If so then perhaps re install Vista. Maybe see if there is a bios update for your comp. I really don't know what could be wrong, I think by default when you have dual core it should show up in the device manager without having to do anything. Maybe just try reinstalling windows Vista?

Well, BIOS is newest, F10 for my mobo. I will try to nuke Vista now and see what i get...
i was looking for some quick solution, but whatever. I thought about this myself... will tell you what happens.

my friend had this prob as well but he has an X2. I had looked up a few things for him and i windows has a manager for it, believe it was ACPI?
1. Go to device manager
2. Open the Computer node
3. Right click the option that shows (probably ACPI Uniprocessor PC or Standard PC) and select properties
4. Click the driver tab
5. Click the update driver button
6. Select no, then click next
7. Select install from a specific location, then click next
8. Click the don't search option, then click next
9. Select ACPI Multiprocessor PC from the list and click next
10. Follow the prompts and reboot when prompted

Thanks very much for help... but i ended up wiping Vista, and doing a completely fresh install... now it works :) I can see only one cpu usage meter, but i see two histories, so its' two cores :) I tried settiing affinity, and can chose both cores now... so it's OK now, i guess.

The only thing i don't know... is why this happened in the first place. Beats me.
Thought about wiping before, but i was looking for a quick solution like yours- unfortunately nothing else but this worked.
