Visiting San Francisco next week

EvilYoda

Lifer
I'll be in late Thursday night, so I'll have all of Friday and Saturday and most of Sunday to explore the area. I love traveling and seeing new places (took me long enough to get to SF), so any suggestions are welcome. I'll be doing the museums, shopping, and Chinatown on Friday before my friend arrives around 7.

Where's the best place to do brunch around Union Station (I'm staying at the Parc 55)? I'm looking at a few clubs for Saturday night - White Lies and Friendly Fire are at Slim's, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers @ GAMH, couple of big DJs are in town too. I'm going to check out Bourbon & Branch Friday night because I love that kind of place.

Cliffs:
Best museums/neighborhoods?
Best restaurants?
Best brunch?
Best bars/clubs?
Best place in Chinatown for dim sum @ 1PM on Friday
Best strip club
Transporation: MUNI pass? cabs? (obviously a lot of walking)

Thanks all 🙂

I recommend the Buena Vista Cafe, for the atmosphere, location, food, and Irish Coffee. It's kinda far from Union Square, but doable. Plus it's close to Ghiradelli Square, which is both fun and delicious. For dinner, you should just walk around North Beach until you find something that smells delicious.

It's hard to beat Yoshi's for sushi/classy bar atmosphere.

Do you feel like taking in the city, or perhaps some of the more outdoorsy stuff? I figure you're salready going to want to see the golden gate. If you want to cross it though, it is completely different over there. Head over to Fort Baker and there is a little hotel that renovated the old officer's quarters and buildings into a spa/resort type of deal. Aside from the little fort and like half an hour of sightseeing, you can taking the numerous hiking trails or drive north another 5 minutes or so into Sausolito and browse all the stores while walking along the bay shore.

Otherwise, the other "have to do" things in Sf is walk along the pier, eat some clam chowder, watch animal haped bread being made, chinatown, golden gate park (not next to golden gate) has the botanical garden, conservatory of flowers, japanese tea garden, academy of sciences. All I can think of for now.

there's a nice bike tour that goes through a nice scenic tour of the place around golden gate bridge.
the 49mi scenic drive is noice too

If you want to be a tourist you could rent one of those tour go-kart type things.

When I was there I walked down market street to the ferry building, the up to coit tower, then to pier 39, up lombard street, to haight and ashbury (lame), and then back to where we were staying. You get some good view from coit tower so I'd recommend that, and lombard street is kinda neat to say you walked up it.

I won't have a car, so I'll be taking public transportation or a taxi from place to place. I expect to be walking a lot, that's not a problem.

Thanks for the help so far (BTW, FBB's in San Jose), I appreciate it 🙂

depends on the mood.

I guess I'll bring some beer, just to make sure you're in the mood.

my uncle always took me to some small little italian joint, hole in the wall basically, no idea of the name, but the food was great... SF just has so much to do, ive been there twice and would love to go there all the time.

Dude! you read me like a book

but as far as the city goes, I'm told the first (original) Irish coffee actually occurred at one of those places on Fisherman's Warf. so you could check that out. If you're from the northeast you'll raise your nose at the clam chowder here. so, you've been warned.

also, I must suggest the Alcatraz tour. It fucking rocks. get the spooky audio tape.

Muir woods/beach, etc also awesome, but you need a car to get there. walk across the bridge is awesome. there is a group that does a driving tour in an open roof, old-timey firetruck. not sure what they're called, but you can google it i guess.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've read some of the other threads. I'm googling like crazy this week, before I get there.

Thing is, the plan was for a girl to fly in to meet me, but now she's scared because of job concerns and might not go anymore. If she doesn't go, I'll have a lot more free time. 😛
