Visiting San Francisco for a week.

I'm off to San Fran next week from Tuesday to Tuesday.

I'll be depending mostly on the BART for my travels. I'm also on a budget. Does the BART run 24/7 like NYC transit? Are there public buses? How do those trolleys work?

Not sure if I'll be able to stay with a friend of mine, so I might need to arrange lodging too. There any cheap hostels around?

Forget the touristy crap, unless it's something no one should miss.

Where do I eat?

this is for a business trip?

I won't be alone the entire time, but there will undoubtedly be times where I'll be off exploring on my own.

This is a trip purely for pleasure

I'll be in SF over the weekend, my second trip in as many months - I wouldn't skip over the touristy stuff so quickly. SF really has some beautiful sights...I had a great time just walking around. Up the Embarcadero, through Union Station (shopping), the Castro, etc.

I'm going to start a thread of my own since I need help with which wineries I should try to visit. Have a good trip. 🙂

Watch WICKED. OMG.

Okay, sorry I'm in my musical mode today because I decided to load up the soundtrack and even though it's over a month since I saw it, I decided to take my mom to see it tomorrow and I'm just smiling all over. I'm seeing it tomorrow at 2pm.

BTW, Bart closes at 12am. The last trains run then. Don't get stranded! Muni is very good in SF, although I've seen better bus systems, but it's certainly better than anything else in the Bay Area.

Other sites to see:

- CA Academy of Sciences - I've heard this is awesome from everyone who's gone, and I really want to see it still.

Eh, I'm a New Yorker. I'm in no rush to see any musicals, unless it's a San Fran exclusive show that everyone should see.

Thanks for the info on the Academy of Sciences

there's another post about this with a good list of massage parlors. they're not in the Castro, regular massage parlors.

i would say, drive down Market towards Castro, then veer to the right up 17th, and go up to the top of Twin Peaks. then you can decide where to go next.

Noe Valley is a nice neighborhood, the cable car out there is sort of fun, goes around curves and stuff. also, Cole Valley. Craig Newmark used to have an address at 1010 Cole, right near the cable car & UCSF, you could always visit the offices of Craigslist.

of course if you're up at the top of Twin Peaks looking around the city, you might head out towards the ocean where it's easy to find parking (in the Richmond).

then you can take a 38 Geary bus in to the crowded parts, e.g. Pacific Heights.

personally i like Chinese BarBQ so i go to places in Chinatown, right off of Broadway.

The Cal Academy of Sciences really was a cool place - kinda pricey, but you get a discount on your ticket if you show a public transportation pass (we took the Culture Bus).

Rent a bike (Blazing Saddles is hella touristy but from what I hear a good rental company) and ride across the Golden Gate bridge to Tiburon. Eat and drink at Sam's while looking at the bay. Take the ferry back to SF.

Napa:
Darioush
Alpha & Omega
Franciscan (not as big a fan as I used to be, though)
Vi sa Touie [major sic right there] for the picnic and shop
Elyse (need reservation, but worth it--small tasting room)
Opus One (if you can swing it)
Stags Leap (fun tour)

Only one in Sonoma that I really liked was Ravenswood. Excellent tasting, grounds, great wines you can only find at the winery. Though...I need to spend some more time in Sonoma.

be sure to hit up Alcatraz, though. It's well worth it.

All of the Fisherman's wharf though is indeed a bit blah...

I've been wanting to check this place out. beer and sausage; what's not to like?
