My girlfriend, I, and possibly some friends (ages 20 - 22) are thinking about visiting San Francisco either at the end of November or at the end of December. Has anyone visited anytime lately?

I was wondering:
We're thinking about staying at a student hostels ($20 - $30), any good ones?
How is city transport? Can we get by without renting a car?
Any cheap airlines from Atlanta? I check Kayak and found tickets @ $300
Amtrak @ $900 D:

What should we see? I'm a photographer so photographic places +++

I'll post more questions if we think of some

Thanks guys,

just in the city, you don't need a car. PT is kind of shit compared to other big cities, but then SF isn't as massive as other big cities.

If you want to do some landscape photography, then consider taking a day and heading north to Point Reyes. You will need to rent a car for that. Muir woods, Muir beach are also on the way.

Depending on how many days you spend, Alcatraz is one of those worthwhile tourist spots to spend ~half day. Awesome tour.

Don't forget warm coats...San Francisco is possibly the coldest dammed place I've ever been. OK, not sub-zero, but when the fog rolls in...it chills you to your bones...even when it's in the 50's)

Outside the normal tourist destinations in the city, there's not a lot that's photographic, IMO. Rent a car...get out of the city and drive the coast.
