I'm doing the overnight program at MIT to see if it's right for me

Anything I should ask to see while I'm there?
Anything that is a waste of time?

Any thoughts on MIT in general would be helpful

Thanks

I just graduated from the undergrad program there, so hopefully I can give you decent advice. Go have a look at the standard spots (kresge auditorium, killian court , stata center), but focus on talking to people at MIT. Attend a couple of classes. visit dorms on both East and west campus - they have different vibes - you might like one vs the other. MIT is defined by the people who go there, and the professors, not necessarily by it's facilities. Therefore, spend most of your time hanging out with people from different parts of the campus to see if you would be comfortable there. Don't be surprised to see frazzled people occasionally- MIT can push people very hard sometimes. But we have fun also (atleast in East Campus :D)

I found MIT to be an incredible experience, and I'm very sad to be leaving it for good. In terms of an educational experience, it's whatever you make of it - MIT gives you incredible freedom in choosing classes, and many of the professors are amazing. But you have to put the effort in, and take advantage of the variety of excellent classes offered. There will definitely be times when you hate it - multiple tests a week sometimes, late night projects/labs/homework, but the community is incredibly supportive, and soon you'll find that you wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. It's a place students love to hate, as is epitomized by it's unofficial slogan (IHTFP).

P.S.: What major do you plan (if any). Where are you going to stay - on campus or frat?

I'm staying at the MIT branded hotel across the street this weekend. It's about as close as I see anyone getting without years of sincere determination.

Take advantage. :)

This is very strange, but sometimes when you visit they'll screw up your airline ticket and you'll end up in some weird place in Boston or Cambridge. Make sure to talk to the guy at the ticketing counter to make sure you're getting off at the right airport (LAX). From there, take the SuperShuttle to Pasadena and you'll immediately see the wonders of the school.

Joking aside, my sister goes there and when I visited her, I did everything darthsidious has said and I think it's a great way to see what the school is like. Most importantly, talk to/hang out with the students; they're great people and they'll tell you all the things about the school that you don't read in guidebooks. The best part is that you'll also see how they live, eat, have fun, etc. You'll definitely notice the difference between the east and west campuses.

Pranking pre-frosh is one thing, but misdirecting clueless little visitors... tsk tsk, I expected better of caltech. Maybe you're just sore that we stole you cannon.

BTW, did your sister stay in first west in EC? I know someone who went to school at MIT, and her brother is now going to caltech.....

QFT.

I was completely unimpressed with the social scene at MIT. Maybe I didn't look in the right places, but college is just as much about socializing as studying (assuming you can handle both, of course).

Heh heh...perhaps. That was a pretty good move on your guys' part; we'll have some trouble topping that one for a while. On the other hand, things happen to that cannon that I shall not describe here. I hope you guys didn't touch it too much...

Hmmm...I don't know enough about MIT to know what "first west in EC" is but I do know she stayed in McCormick for two years before studying abroad. Maybe you guys know each other? She should be one class below you.

Where did you hang out at MIT. The social scene at Senior House, is very different from, say Simmons Hall.

Nope, not the right person, I don't know her... BTW, EC is East Campus (a dorm at MIT), while first west is a hall in that dorm.

Ah, okay, thanks. I did think "EC" stood for "East Campus" but the "first west" confused me. :D

You should check out the fake bomb art display of MIT students, currently on display with the Boston Police and Logan Airport security...

MIT is not in Pasadena, California. LAX = Los Angeles Int'l Aiport. Surely you must mean Boston Logan.

Caltech is in Pasadena.

You should comb your hair. The whooshing sound you just heard probably messed it all up.
