Visiting Israel part I

biostud

Lifer
Just saw a program about traveling in the US, and it made me want to go back. I'm thinking about a week on the East Coast in late February (sat-sat, week 7). This summer I visited NY + California, and I thought about going to Washington DC. Anyone has any input on going to Washington or another place for a week in late February?

Update
Since you don't want me to come visit in the winter I ordered a trip to Israel instead 😛

It may be cold in February anywhere from NC to Maine. Dress appropriately and be aware of possible travel delays....not a good time of the year to hitchhike.

DC will be nice....you can see the sites there for a few days...maybe you could catch a train back to NYC if you get bored?

It's not a bad time to travel in the US as most schools will be in session, but it makes for a better time of the year to go skiing in Colorado or Utah....or a better time to visit Florida.

Typically March and April is the spring thaw....with mid March being the last chance of snow and May 15 being the last chance of Frost. Travel in March and April is a rough time to fly because Colleges have Spring Break and plane icing causes a lot of travel delays and pains.

Agree with Scarpozzi, Feb isn't a good time for the northeast. West coast, skiing or south Florida, maybe. Or, Vegas since you don't really need to go outside.

If you really just want to do the northeast, wait til end of March or later.

As a local DC resident I will say DC is a bit cold in Feb. not overly cold but it will be cool. Plenty of things to do, Smithsonian museums, monuments, national gallery of art, sculpture garden, etc. But more then a few days and you will probably get bored.

Depends on what you are interested in and how the weather will be then. If you are a history museum buff, there is quite a bit to see in DC itself and in Charlottesville VA. My personal favs in the DC/VA area are the Udvar-Hazy air space museum by Dulles airport, Monticello (Jefferson's house) & Montpelier (Madison's house) both by Charlottesville.

The Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline drive are pretty cool (not sure of their conditions in Feb since I have been on them in the Summer, Spring & Fall.) nice leisurely drive that is very scenic.

Quite a bit of Civil War battlefields in northern VA too if you are into that thing.

I would only have sun-fri as whole days as I would travel both Saturdays. Miami could also be an option.

well miami beach is nice, miami itself is fairly shitty, but if you want to go to the beach mid 70s isn't unusual for miami in feb.

I'm not traveling across the Atlantic just to lie on a beach. I want to see something and explore.

Terrible time to visit that part of the country. Consider Fall--where humidity isn't as bad, it's still relatively warm, and the leaves are nice and purdy.

I don't think the price/travel time would be worth it for less than a week 😛.

What about Texas?

If it's late Feb, you probably get decent weather. Still a small chance that a cold front blows through and it's wet cold and windy. Wait til March and the weather is usually great, plus you can catch sxsw in Austin. Although hotels might already be booked.

If your travel can be deferred until early March I might recommend Daytona Florida. During that time they have 500,000 bikers and about 200,000 spring breakers in addition to the week of motorcycle racing.

You aint seen nothing until you've seen an 18 year old blonde college girl bent over a crotch rocket wearing a thong bikini...

well, I'm not the only one that mentioned that the weather will be shitty at that time :colbert:

But, from Denmark, you probably don't care?

Either way, I mention it because one of the larger tourist attractions for that part of the country is the Fall colors.

The best of what this country has to offer is FAR away from any city or your typical "tourist traps".

Good luck

Yeah, but since it's only going to be a short trip, I don't want to spend to much time on the road or other forms of transportation.

But maybe I should just postpone it for the fall. I just want to go traveling again.

America + no transportation doesn't mix well outside of cities (in some cases, even in cities) hehe

I was in Israel for three weeks in '92. Stayed in downtown Tel Aviv, and attended classes north of the city during the week. On weekends we rented a car and roamed around Jerusalem and up along the Dead Sea. Took in a lot of sights, some spectacular, some moving, some pretty alarming 🙂. The food was awesome. The women were gorgeous. All in all we had a memorable time. If you're a history buff you'll braingasm repeatedly.

Sounds great. I'll be staying 3 days in Tel Aviv and 3 day in Jerusalem. Plane tickets + hotels ran a total of ~$800.
