visit to dentist

I scheduled a consultation to my dentist/ortho. Once getting there, I just wanted to go straight to the invisalign impressions, why do anything else to my teeth right now? So he's like I need to take 18 xrays and do a 'routine' cleaning and cavity check.. Tooth whitening. All this an additional few hundred dollars to the already 4500 he estimated for my 1 year or less invisalign.

I asked him what he needs to take so many xrays for (especially since I want to avoid the xrays at all costs, some may remember my xray thread) since I'm doing invisalign. He gave me some BS about there being a possible tooth in my jaw or mouth cancer and saying dental xrays are harmless (funny how the dentist gets the hell out of the room whilst doing them) What do I need a cleaning for right now? Why do I want to check for cavities right now? Whether or not I have these things I don't have to get them taken care of to start the invisalign process first right? But he insisted I do. I could get my invisalign first, then get a cleaning, cavity fillings (assuming I need any and I don't.)

I talked to a ortho only office the next day saying I don't need any cleaning or anything to get invisalign done. In fact they say they don't even do the cleaning but only straighten teeth. Then I asked about the xrays, whether I absolutely need them and they too said yeah as for gathering some data for documentation for the invisalign lab. I asked if all orthos do this and they said 'probably' but maybe some don't. They assured me that they use digital xrays and could do 1 panoramic xray and that digi xrays have 90% less radiation than traditional ones. What do you guys think about all this, what are my options, or your experiences? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

regarding doctors/dentists leaving the room when taking xrays:
a patient may get something like 1 or 2 xray sessions a year on average (if even that much).
doctors and dentists do a bunch of them PER DAY. that adds up and you better believe they're gonna leave the room each time.

xrays are bad for your health if you get them every day. Cleaning and cavity check makes sense. If you have sealents or fillings those can affect the impression. So you don't want to make an impression if you are going to change the impression with a sealent. Tooth whitening is not needed though.

when you get a job, you sign up for flex spending, which is pre tax, up to 2k a year.. i had nothing to do medically.. so if i dont spend it, i lose it. Basically flex shows that you earn 2k less per year, thus paying less tax. So for the past 5 year, I had Lasik and invisalign done. Other wise I pay more tax and have nothing to show for.... so yeah, basically I'm getting these unnecessary things done.. I was only fixing 2 teeth..

An FSA saves you money by reducing your income taxes. The contributions you make to a Flexible Spending Account are deducted from your pay BEFORE your Federal, State, or Social Security Taxes are calculated and are never reported to the IRS. The end result is that you decrease your taxable income and increase your spendable income. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year.

Metal Braces > Invisalign in many cases

But for just minor teeth straightening Inisalign is best.

As for the OP post. There is nothing dangerous about getting an xray done. Stop being a pussy and get the xray.

Xrays won't kill you, but they will show the dentist if there is some condition that needs to be treated before doing the alignment. Some conditions could lead to teeth cracking or breaking instead of moving into the new positions.
