Can you guys please browse to Chemisery.com

It is going to be a portal initially for UT Students to discuss Chemistry e-homework, study groups, etc. Currently, there is a portal devoted to Texas Physics (same topics) that has done quite well.

I am trying to find a condensed phpBB template, so that each course board is a single line, and when you click it, it opens the group of sub-boards such as Exams, Study Groups, Homework. Where can I find that?

If you don't have Firefox, click that link and get it! Refreshing is nice too =P

Update: I am up to 19 members, and have already paid for the domain registration from ad income. I hope this gets off the ground, because it's gonna be fun when it does.

Update: How does this disclaimer sound?

Chemisery.com is a chemistry oriented community serving UT, with the intent of providing a commonly accessible help center for all students.
The Chemisery.com Admins, Moderators, and all affiliates in no way promote or condone actions violating the University of Texas Honor Code.
Chemisery, Telnap, and all affiliated individuals assume no responsibility for user posts or actions. Said users assume full legal responsibility.

Everywhere that I go to look for phpBB templates only has coloring schemes. Where can I get actual, forum changing templates such as the one I described?

I would like it something like this:

[+] CH 302 - Lyon

Then when you click on it:

[-] CH 302 - Lyon
. . . (+) Homework
. . . (+) Exams
. . . (+) Study Groups

And once you click Homework or the (+) next to it:

[-] CH 302 - Lyon
. . . (-) Homework
. . . . . . . HW #1
. . . . . . . HW #2
. . . . . . . HW #3
. . . . . . . HW #4
. . . (+) Exams
. . . (+) Study Groups

And clicking on the HW#1 would take you to a board for HW#1 where users can make posts, reply, etc. Or, I can make the second hierarchy of links go directly to boards. So it would be more like this:

[-] CH 302 - Lyon
. . . HW #1
. . . HW #2
. . . HW #3
. . . HW #4
. . . Exam #1
. . . Exam #2
. . . Exam #3
. . . Final Exam
. . . Study Groups

How can I get this done?

the experience i've had with school/class related forums:

no one visits them. the handful that do get bored, and stop visiting them.

but good luck. looks fine for what it is..

Well, I would have to agree with you for the most part ... but the Texas Physics forum gets alot of use. There are 2500+ registered members, and 1,000s of impressions on homework due dates.

hold on i'm confused. why do you have that CH302-LYON as a forum name if it's the only class the forum is for?

As far as I know, phpBB doesn't have the functionality to do sub forums, you'd have to get another piece of forum software. Invision Power Board can do it, but it's no longer free. You'll most likely have to buy a forum package to accomplish that, or just write your own.

I'm pretty sure phpBB can do it, with JavaScripting, as seen at Physucks.com.

As for the one class present, I am developing the forum right now, trying to get a condensed interface that is easy to use, and utilizes the expand/collapse design.

Oh, well not natively, there's mods to install subforums in the Mods forum on phpbb.com, but that site seems like it's a custom job, just some simple PHP. Just pulls the name of whatever forums you want / posts / moderator etc.. based on the category you choose. If you have a basic understanding of PHP you should be able to whip up a similar functioning page.

SaturnX, that's a little bit of a problem. I have ... very basic understanding of PHP. I see how it redirects you to index2.php?c=49 for example, but I am not entirely sure how to integrate that into the forum PHP, nor do I know how to only display a certain grouping of forums.

It looks like they titled the forum group "CH 302 - Lyon", and when you click that, you get the actual boards in the grouping.

But if you are only going to have 1 Main topic and a bunch of sub-topics, there really is no point at all to the main topic. Just name the forum that.

What I'm talking about is if you use this form here ...

[-] CH 302 - Lyon
. . . HW #1
. . . HW #2
. . . HW #3
. . . HW #4
. . . Exam #1
. . . Exam #2
. . . Exam #3
. . . Final Exam
. . . Study Groups

Drop the first line of that and just make the forums home page look like ...

HW #1
HW #2
HW #3
HW #4
Exam #1
Exam #2
Exam #3
Final Exam
Study Groups

But if you are going to do the sub forums, i still wouldn't have the top forum of CH302 - Lyon stand alone as its own forum. basically you are going to go to the /forum homepage, click on /forum/ch302-lyon EVERY SINGLE time you go to the forum, just to get to the content. its just introducing an extra step that is not necessary.

If you were going to have 2 or 3 classes in the forum, THEN that extra step would make sense.

Well you see the whole index2.php?=49 isn't a part of phpBB, the owner of the site wrote that themselves, so it's all coded in the PHP file. So when it gets the argument, c=49, it queries the database to pull the info for the required forums.

All the information (like users and what not, who's on etc..) needs to be pulled directly from the standard index.php file. Basically you'll need to edit the file to obtain what you want, and with a very basic understanding it's gonna be quite the task, unless of course you can find a mod for it on the phpBB site forums.

Purbeast0: That's what I was trying to say. There will be about 10 - 12 professors.

SaturnX: Yea, it seems like it is a bit convoluted.

Hmm, I didn't think that was going to happen =P

I thought that if you click on a category name, it brings you to the index for the category.

I'm attempting to streamline it and make it do what I want. I can't seem to do it completely.

When you go to the site, I want all the boards to be minimized, and when you click on a course, expand the list of boards. When you get to the index, click a prof name. I want them to all be collapsed from the get-go.

How?
