I work at CUSA so it was a bit cheaper for me, but not a bad idea for anyone.
The 2-year plan is $20. Since it's in the $100-200 price bracket, the 1-year would be $20, so you might as well get the 2-year TAP warranty for the same price.
This is how it works: the warranties are "Replacement Plans." They're meant to be no questions asked policies. If you bring in a "broken" card, we have to give you one at least as good as the original.
Now, the GF3 TI200s aren't gonna be around for too much longer. The TI500s are already discontinued and out of stock in most stores. If you bring in a card that's broken, and we don't have that same card in stock, we have to give you a better one. Which probably means a GeForce 4 TI4200 - for free!
If we DO still have the TI200 when you bring it back in, you will have to pay the difference to get the better card. I'm guessing the GF4 TI4200 will come out at $199 (at least that's what everyone's expecting). CUSA's price on the GF3 TI200 is $150 right now. If that stays for a few more weeks, you'll have to pay $50 for the new GeForce 4 in a worst-case scenario. Personally, I'd just hang on to the GF3 until it's discontinued, then bring it in.
I hope that wasn't too confusing. Here's a summation:
Buy the GeForce 3 TI200 at Best Buy.
Bring your receipt and the card into CompUSA, and get their 2 year $19.99 replacement plan
Wait until your card is discontinued, and the GeForce 4 TI4200 comes out (April I think)
Bring your GF3 and your receipt into CUSA, let them know it's broken, and get your new card.
The only thing I can think of that could go wrong with this is someone could give you a different card instead of the GF4 TI4200. The only card on the market I can think of is the Radeon 8500. And if you ask me, that's not a step up. I've owned both. If worst comes to worst, you can offer to pay the difference between the Radeon and the GF4. You still get off with a card for $50 or less when you trade in.
Anyone got any questions, or problems with this you can think of?
