VisionTek problems

I just purchased a VisionTek 32MB Geforce 2 GTS, but seem to be having problems. Whenever i play quake, it seems to crash (especially when i change settings). It just blackscreens, and my monitor light turns from green to yellow, almost like it locks up (because i can hear the sound that quake was playing repeating). So i reinstalled quake and started over with a new config and everything, but still the same problem. Then, when i reboot after the lockups i either get a screen that is plaid (green and red) or striped/blocked, like its rendering half of what is there (like i see every other letter). I dont think this is normal, and have tried different version of the drivers and still the same. I also noticed that when i DO get to run quake 3 demo001, the results are only about 10-20 fps better than my voodoo 3 3000 (regardless of resolution or color depth). Do you think i just got a faulty card? or are there some driver issues? or incompatabilities with my hardware? This is my system : Celeron 566 o/c'ed to 875, 384MB RAM, Abit BH6, IBM HD, monster mx300, linksys NIC.

Any ideas, comments, similar situations?

Thanks in advance

Try to uninstall ALL 3dfx drivers and registry entries. This is VERY important, since 3dfx unistaller does not remove everything.

Also, try different drivers.

I had the same type of problems when switching from the V3 3k to Visiontek GTS.
3dfx uninstall, and registry editing, and re-installing games still did not correct things. 3dfx can be like a virus, and finds ways to leave files scattered in your system. The only way to correctly remove 3dfx is to reformat. After doing that, WOW. This is the best upgrade done since going from P166mmx to K6-3 400, or from the K6-3 400 to Duron @ 935MHz. Q2 benchmarks more than doubled, (crusher 1024x768 now at 170fps), and now I can use the second UT CD that came with the V3, for the extra 400 megs of textures. UT is now truely Unreal.. Also, nVidia 6.47 drivers have worked great with everything I can throw at them.

I have a similar problem that I have pretty much narrowed down to a bad motherboard. I have formatted and reinstalled win2k and windows 98, tried all the different drivers etc, set video bios shadowing etc off in the bios, Apeture size to all different sizes, upgraded my GeForce 1 to a GeForce 2 GTS (less power draw) and yet it still locks up immediatly upon entering any game..it just black screens then the monitor LED goes yellow. I even tried switching power supplies, to no avail. so it has to be my motherboard, which is a brand new Soyo 6BA+100. hopefully Soyos has a decent RMA dept, because this is really getting to be a headache.

Well, i went and returned the card today and got the same thing, but still the same problem. This one does seem to do it a lot less, in fact it only does it when i switch from lightmap to vertex lighting in q3. Any ideas on that one, really wierd problem ( i am reformatting later this week when i have time, and hopefully that is the cure all/end all of things).

Thanks again

Please keep us updated after you reformat, so we know if we were on the right track or not.
