VisionTek no longer produces 4850 cards?

just checked bestbuy.com, and newegg.com, and no VisionTek 4850s to be found anywhere.

What's up with that? What will happen to my "lifetime" warranty?

Same thing that happens when nobody is producing your card anymore. You get whatever is equal or better (hopefully).

Lifetimee is sometimes defined as useful product life. Some shady MFRs will word their guarantee to mean usable life (meaning you're SOL). These are pretty rare now, to my knowledge.

More commonly, lifetime is defined as lifetime, but replacement with a current rough equivalent.

I've never sent a video card back, but I did send a stick of "lifetime guarantee" PC133 back once. They didn't make that anymore, so they sent me a stick of PC2700 DDR. For my needs this was actually a useful upgrade. For some people this would be of less use.

They may still have some refurb units just for warranty purposes that are not for sale. Otherwise bitch to a manager until they shut you up with a replacement 4870.

*edit - By the way, I know you haven't gotten to the end of this RMA yet, but so far how has VisionTek treated you? We all know how decent some of the Nvidia board makers are, there doesn't seem to be as much info on the AMD side in regards to how responsive and decent a companies technical support and RAM service is. Just curious.

To clarify, I'm not looking to RMA just yet. In fact my four HD4850s are still sitting in their boxes. I was just concerned if VisionTek's "lifetime" warranty was like PNY (I think it was), in which case "lifetime" refers to the market lifetime of the card, and after they stop making the card your SOL.

So not only is your original card covered for the lifetime of ownership, but if you need to RMA it the replacement card you receive will also be covered for life. And if they no longer produce that particular card, you should receive one at least as good as the one you sent in.

We just sent an XFX Geforce 7900GS 256MB card in for warranty 2 weeks ago and received a Geforce 9600GSO 1GB new card instead.

Not bad?

I've had 6 Sapphire cards with no problems at all. My powercolor x1550 is the only card to have anything wrong with it. It actually just had wrong specs listed. IT said 256mb 128-bit DDR2, when it was only 256mb with a 32-bit data bus.

Who the hell came up with that shitty card?

Makes you feel like it would have been better to spend you $$$ on a crappy card versus the shipping to send the 7900gt back...LOL. What does a 8600 go for, like 30$> AR or about that slightly used?

They will send you a comparable current gen card if its several years down the road. It will almost assuredly be a refurbished one regardless what you get, so get loud if they send you one that looks like its had a hard life. That's what I'm doing with EVGA right now (so far to no avail).

be sure to register to get your lifetime warranty. A painful lesson my brother learned.

Most limited lifetime product warranties have always and continue to mean active or useful market life. The "as long as the purchaser owns the product or remains living" warranties are the exception.

Should be fairly obvious, since warranties cover a product, not a human.
