I'm sure AllofMP3.com will find alternative means, but it's still a hurdle for some of you guys. :)

When they finally shut down that place I would be willing to bet all the credit card numbers and card holder information will end up in the hands of some Russian criminal types (mafia).

Last time I added money to my account, allofmp3 sent me off to a different payment site. So the charge isn't coming from allofmp3 themselves. Wonder what visa and MC are doing about that?

Answer:

On Wednesday, a message on the payment section of the Web site notified visitors that credit card payment was not available "at the moment." The site directed prospective customers to make a credit card payment on another site, alltunes.com.

That site listed that it accepted payments in Visa and EuroCard/MasterCard. However, Visa shut down payment processing for that site as of Oct. 1, Barker said.

Oh well. I'll use my last $10 on stuff I really want.

Why would you bother to pay for music when the money isn't even going to the artist or even the label? I thought this site disregarded copywrite laws...

It does, the people who use the site are the dumbest people on earth. If you're going to buy music, buy it so the artist gets their fair cut. If you're going to screw the artist on what is essentially an illegal download, why pay at all? Just download it for free from a dozen other sources.

Have never signed up or bought a song from that place. I'm just a sucker for buying the actual album and ripping the tracks to FLAC and MP3 using EAC.

Now all the RIAA has to do is get Visa/MC to hand over the names and addresses of all the customers (court order maybe?) who did business with AllofMP3.com and slap a few lawsuits against them for knowingly buying stolen music.

It should not be hard proving it, with all those financial records.

It would be hard to prove that that they knew it was stolen.

Ignorance of the law a way to get by it?

The RIAA will not be able to get to AllofMP3, it is only natural to assume that they will go after the people they can get, the Americans that bought from them.

Ignorance isn't a way to get by the law, but RIAA would have their work cut out trying to prove any users 'knowingly' purchased stolen music. RIAA also has stacks of IPs from filesharers; they pick and choose ones to pursue based on legal manpower, not lack of potential defendants.

I already discussed the AllOfMP3 situation with a lawyer friend back when I signed up with them a couple years ago. As remote as your chances are for getting slapped with a lawsuit if you're a filesharer, the chances are exponentially more remote for AllOfMP3 users. Why would RIAA's legal team pursue tougher cases when they have a basket full of easy ones right in front of them?

They had an amazing catalog of rare titles, the albums were like $2 each, virus free, and a great interface. That's why.

Impossible - the riaa has no clue what specific music was bought from allofmp3. Without that, they can't sue for copyright infringement because they can't prove their copyrights were violated.
