VirZOOM is a new VR accessory in the form of an exercise bike: (video is a bit NSFL, I'd skip it)

http://www.virzoom.com/

Quick video demonstration:

https://twitter.com/VirZOOM/status/646054215924715524/video/1

In summary:

* Core idea: pedal to move in the game
* $200 pre-order price (plus $50 shipping); regular price $250
* Ships in Q1 2016 (I'm guessing April though)
* Works with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Playstation VR (PC & PS4 support)
* Controls include button, lean, and speed
* $10/mo for multi-player, access to games, etc. (basically a digital gym membership). First 1,000 pre-orders get a lifetime subscription.

Basically, VirZOOM took a standard Chinese-manufactured compact exercise bike (8 resistance levels with distance, calorie, and heart rate tracking) and added some electronics to it. You get three kinds of controls:

1. The pedals have a sensor for speed
2. The VR equpiment's head position tracking for leaning (for example, their car racing game uses leaning for steering)
3. Buttons on the hand rails

The design is extremely compact; it folds up for easy storage (under 40 pounds, 24" x 26" footprint). It looks really similar to the Wirk Bike, which is a similar concept, but adds a tray to put your laptop or other device. I actually got a Wirk Bike for my mom for Christmas & it is very comfortable to use. Same price ($200) & I was surprised it didn't sell for $600 like a normal exercise bike. Photo of it in action:

http://www.activenable.com/assets/images/asp852-stamina-wirk-bike-demo-1w.jpg

The Wirk Bike is extremely well-designed & really easy to use, definitely not a cheap, crappy design at all. Folds up easy, extends easily, etc. Since the designs are so similar, I'm assuming the VirZOOM bike will be of similar quality & ease-of-use.

As far as applications go, there's no mention of Steam integration; they have a few game demos available already, however (racing game, horse game, etc.). Strava integration is a must, of course. I can think of a handful of games right off the bat that would be really fun:

1. Tour de France
2. Zombie Run (the running app), but on a bike and with actual zombies you can see. Basically HIIT cardio. It would be fun if it was World War Z-style with fast zombies! Talk about workout motivation :D
3. Paperboy 3D
4. Flight sims (X-plan, Microsoft Flight Sim, multi-player dogfights)
5. Tony Hawk games (X-Games BMX biking without the risk of injury would be rad!)
6. Steampunk mech game (think Robo Jox or Pacific Rim, but with pedal-power like a strandbeest). Lots of options here...ever want to pilot Howl's Moving Castle? hahahaha
7. Flintstones racing game (a la Mario Kart, yaba daba do!). Lots of options here...racing, multi-player attack racing, stuff like Twisted Metal, soapbox pedal racing, etc.
8. Mario in 3D
9. A HIIT-focused (high/low/break) game similar in structure to Resident Evil, where you have the scene & poke around in it (so it keeps it interesting but breaks up the rate of pedaling). Also games like Time Crisis where the movement is handled for you - you could control the speed of the scene via the pedaling.
10. Couch to 5K training program (but for bikes)
11. Virtual spinning classes (with a digital coach)
12. Pedalbike tours (captured with a 3D camera setup for 360 VR & speed-controlled by you) of famous cities
13. Pedal-powered landscape aerial flight tours (as if you were in an ultralight or something)
14. Tron & Tron Legacy biking game (with laser bikes)
15. Spaceship/car games with obstacles like Star Fox or F-Zero
16. Running games like Far Cry & Mirror's Edge, where you're bolting through a forest or doing parkour
17. Short multi-player party games like Fusion Frenzy 2's Turbine Jumper
18. That one car game with all of the crazy ramps, I think it's called Flatout

I think this is a super awesome concept. I wanted something like this when I was a kid, but the technology didn't exist. We've had a lot of mediocre entries into fitness entertainment systems (Wii Fit board, Rock Band drums, etc.), but nothing that has ever really taken off. If they do a really good job with making entertaining games, I think that this literally has the potential to help curb America's obesity issue. Everyone knows they should exercise, but no one wants to do it because it's not fun. Cardio is like the most boring thing on the planet unless you happen to love running or having a biking group or something. Having some kind of interactive game that removes the pain of boringness & having to work would really revolutionize fitness. Plus if your character or vehicle quits moving because you're not pedaling, that will motivate kids to exercise a lot more than playing Minecraft on their tablet on the couch for hours every day. Also, the original Wii never really took off because the game selection was always crap, so I hope this can do better! Some early reviews:

Engadget
The Verge
Game Informer

beard's Twitter account has a lot of great retweets if you want to keep up on the news:

This is a first-gen product & VR is just barely about to hit consumers over the next few months, so I'm not expecting perfect, but it already seems good enough for me...built on a solid exercise bike (which is conveniently compact to store away as a gaming accessory), pedal-power detection, etc. Very excited to get mine in & try it out!

I found a similar-looking bike:

http://www.amazon.com/Marcy-NS652-Foldable-Excercise-Bike/dp/B0090OKG38/

Manual says holds up to 300 pounds:

http://i.sears.com/s/d/pdf/mp-tc/spinpdf/spin_prod_966668012

Another model says 250 pounds max:

http://www.amazon.com/Innova-Health-Fitness-Folding-Upright/dp/B00EDHZ1KU

I reached out to the manufacturer to get official numbers. Per your weightloss thread, you're already down 130 pounds...if the max is 300, then another 35 down will be cake & you can start cruising! Imagine how much more motivating exercise will be if you're driving a race car instead of just staring at the wall on an exercise bike, haha!

I just order the virzoom bike for 200$. This is a great deal because the first 1000 sold gives a lifetime membership to all games, fitness tracking, online multiplayer. No brainer cause this company isn't going away. The way I see this playing out is that a major studio will come along and fund some amazing games for it since the idea is patented. This is the best way to experience vr because you use your whole body. I hate exercising but this would get me to do something everyday.

They are working on a world of tanks game where you can pedal forward and back, shoot and talk in multiplayer. They are also developing game where you move at incredibly high speeds as well. Some of my ideas:

Propcycle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaUPVbKdsG4

Helicopter rescue

Flight simulator

Tour de France

Motorcycle

Harry Potter and fly on a virtual Hippogrif

The possibilities are endless!

What do you guys think?

Ahhhhh that would be awesome since it's already a pedal game!

Re: Harry Potter - if they did a FPV Quidditch game, kids would get in shape so fast hahaha. They already have the lean technology in there. Looks like there was an older version of the game for Playstation/Xbox:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGOforLlWqw

So many fun ways to use the lean function too...SW Speeder Bike Chase, SW Podracing, etc.:

That's the thing, if they could get some major backing from Sony (via the PS VR), or Steam, or someone big like that, then they could really take off. The main thing all of the early reviewers have been complaining about is the lack of game quality (simplistic games, low-grade graphics for modern standards, and of course, lack of variety). Assuming they launch in April, then they only have 4 months to come out with better stuff, which isn't a lot of time to develop a high-quality game.

I think it's a great platform, especially for a first-gen offering, and I'm sure it will only grow from here. Another option I can see would be a compact recumbent bike that has more control options for your hands...a joystick for flight games, a steering wheel for car games, etc. Whereas the regular compact Chinese bikes go for about $99, the recumbents run about $50 more, so I think they could still do it on a budget, while also offering more control options:

http://www.amazon.com/Marcy-NS-716R-Magnetic-Resistance-Recumbent/dp/B015EPEMMW

And imagine if they did rowers like the Concept2 or other ergometers (kayak trainers etc.)...you could be on a Viking warship, in an Olympic race, VR 3D whitewater rapids, etc. Lots of opportunities for modifying existing workout machines & making them a lot more fun.

I think Level 2 after digitizing existing workout machines will be hydraulics. I'm not sure how they will get them (1) cost-effect for home use, and (2) safe for home use, but I think that's really going to be the next stage of VR gaming. Might have to go into actual arcades first to get the price down. Some visual examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7-T-Q3AdHk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFCRh-anfRg

Blue Tiger has a small motion simulator that has a protective skirt around the mechanics, which would be safer around kids:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7NdVLAOWvE

There are some interesting concepts out there for budget versions:

http://www.feelthree.com/

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1038266316/qubit-sphere-project/

The trick will be combining a way to exercise with the motion mechanics to create a truly immersive environment. For example, Virtuix has an omnidirectional treadmill that is fairly compact: ($700 pre-order price)

http://www.virtuix.com/

They've demoed a lot of games with it, like Battlefield 4:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTtfAQEeAJI

And even Minecraft: (imagine how many kids would get in shape with this!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Unigo88bFgU

And their new demo game which actually looks really cool:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThSGnLCmWYY

The KAT VR is another one: ($800)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf_jQ264A0U

So right off the bat, I can see 4 controllers being popular:

1. Omni treadmill (walk/jog/run)
2. Upright bike (VirZOOM)
3. Recumbent bike (with controller options for a steering wheel, flight joystick, etc.)
4. Rower (canoe, kayak, etc., depending on the model)

That would make a killer basement gym that would actually motivate you to get your daily workout in because it'd be immersive and FUN to use!

FWIW, VirZOOM said that the recommended weight capacity is 260 pounds.

Thats what I was thinking when I saw/read this, but if max is 260, shoot, thats where I want to be in the end, so a lot of good this i s going to do for me, WTH :(

Dude, if you can get to 260, I will split half the bike with you. No joke.

in my experience these little bikes are really wobbly. Having vr goggles on with a wobbly bike seems like a recipe for disaster.

I think that you should keep your spamming out of our forum?

No, he's legit, he joined from Twitter for this thread. His account is the one I referenced in the OP for the news sources.

I had that concern as well, but one of the reviews specifically said that the bike was solid, despite all of the leaning going on in the games. I wonder how much that has to do with the floor surface though...I'm all-carpet at my place & I have the same concern, definitely don't want to fall off while wearing a $350 headset wired into a $1000+ gaming PC haha.

well I've been on bikes like that and they aren't. However those were bikes used for actual exercise. These bikes probably dont have the resistance.

Virzoom says that the bikes they buy are modified with extra long extenders that are impossible to tip over. There is a thread on Reddit where someone from the team is taking questions

Found that thread:

@JSt0rm, you're right - they had to add structural changes to enhance the stability:

The bike is based on an existing design that can take a beating, we've had over a thousand playtests on a pair so far. Structurally we've widened the feet for safer leaning, which is how you steer, and extended the seating height range and weight capacity.

You can quickly find a match on google images for the base bike, but there's no direct comp since we've widened the feet for stability and increased the seat height range and weight capacity and replaced/upgraded other parts and sensors. I can say we've taken a pair through over a thousand playtests and through airport TSA several times and we're still demoing with them.

Also found the VirZOOM team member answering questions, buz11 - lots of good info in their comments:
