Viruscan problem after a crash

I'm using Win98. After a crash and resetting the motherboard and reinstalling a few items all is well EXCEPT I can't or should I say I'm unable to install Virusscan 5.0. I keep getting the message
"Your system has not been modified. Please run setup again"
I've deleted everything I could find from the HD, still same message.

Any ideas or tips?

Try running an online virus scan first from hereto check for any virus ,you might want to consider using AVG which is free,I went from Mcafee to AVG and won`t go back, last resort is a complete reformat and try installing Mcafee.

Thank, Mem. The online test came up "page not found". However I did get the free AGV and serial no. Reformat as you said is a last resort. Obviously. It's just that I'm so used to mcaffee, which won't install.
Then again, I don't like having no virus protection. I'll try it. Thanks for the free info. Anandtech help to the rescue as usual.

PS. Can I also run the scan from the A drive or is the startup disk for virus removal only?

🙂

Update: I installed AGV. It crashed twice while scanning. Once getting the message "illegal operation" and the second one getting the usual blue screen "fatal exception" or something.

any more suggestions?

Scratch the last post. After several reboots and tries, all seems to be well.

thanks
habba,

I was going to say AVG is solid and rock stable 😉,btw in AVG Control Centre panel under email scanner tab, have all the boxes ticked including Outlook Express plug-in if you use that so it will scan both outgoing and incoming messages. My link to " http://housecall.trendmicro.com" does work in my first post, strange it doesn`t for you.

For info on AVG ,right click on AVG taskbar icon at bottom corner near clock & select "run AVG anti-virus" then click on the help tab at top for all topic info on AVG.
