download.com was pretty good with supplying malware in its install files 🙂

Did you by any chance mean anti-virus? If so, Windows Defender.
 
I just use Windows Security Defender for real-time protection and Malwarebytes Free (and AdwCleaner, now owned by Malwarebytes) for manual invoked 2nd opinion scans. About as good as you can get. Windows Defender will even facilitate an offline scan.
