Virus shut down sound and USB and blanked out hardware devices

My son caught more malware than I can even count. As far as I know I've cleared everything out using MSE, Superantivirus, Malewarebytes, and Combofix. I've even run scans in Safe Mode. But I still can't get audio, USB function or anything to list in the Hardware devices.

When I go to Hardware Devices under System, the list is blank. I've tried to reinstall mobo and sound drivers but it's a no go. The sound drivers do not finish installing. Either this rig has a deeper rooted virus or the mobo is dying (Gigabyte K8NSNSXP-939.)

Other than a reinstall, which I'm trying to avoid for my sons sake, is there a way for Win XP to be repaired to get the hardware devices to show up and function? Thanx

Try to refresh the XP core installation.

Boot from the XP original CD. Skip the first screen that offer Console Repair, and continue as though you install a New XP.

After you Agree etc., the new install screen will come on and would detect the current XP installation.

You would have an option to Press R for Repair.

Use it, it would take about 45Min. and you would have a Refresh Installation of XP while keeping all your application/data and the XP configuration.

P.S. If you made changes to WinXP Security setting (Like Firewall special permission) you have to look over them after the refresh since they might revert to the Default.

If it's more malware than you can count that infected it, I wouldn't even monkey around with trying to fix XP. It will be quicker and easier in the long run if you just do a format and reinstall.

In principle you are right.

However many time the refresh acts like new installation and saves the data and existing application.

If it does not work, then One can reformat and Re-install.

There is nothing to lose but 45Min. (If these 45min. were taken from TV time, then actually it is a Gain :sneaky🙂.

Got it working but now I can't connect to Microsoft to get updates. I keep getting an error. I have a working internet connection though. Went to re install MSE but says I have an older version of XP.
