Virus scanner won't start.. help!

hey guys,

I'm having a problem where NAV2k3 and Mcafee Virusscan won't load in windows during startup or when I tell it to start.

I tried doing a TrendMicro online scan and I'm in the process of doing a Panda Activescan and so far neither has found anything.

I've also tried using Stinger 1.7 after disabling System Restore to no avail.

What the heck is going on and how can I protect my computer again?!

Panda Activescan just found IRC.Coldlife in my machine and apparently cleaned it. However, NAV still won't load autoprotect. Any ideas?

I'll re-install, but only as a last resort due to the time, and resources, and backup hassle!

I believe he was reffering to just reinstalling the anti-v program, not your OS. A NAV reinstall should be pretty quick.

You need to download a bot/trojan scanner (I use Swatit - freebie) and get a firewall (Zonealarm - freebie) up. You should also try heuristic scanning (if you didn't already) from Panda as some of the new viruses are polymorphic.

Here is a procedure that Symantec recommends:
Disable System Restore.
Update your Virus Scanner
Restart you computer in Safe Mode and see if the scanner will start.
Delete or repair all infected files.

Since this bot isn't known for disabling virus scanners, you probably have something else (also). The new big baddie (Bugbear) terminates virus scanners/firewalls processes and installs a backdoor for hackers to explore and be even more malacious.

If you don't think your up to fighting this (whatever virus/trojan that is causing this) then disconnect from the net and start backing up important files and then just reload. (Before you put any of your data back though, make sure you have a fully updated virus scanner running with active scan on).

*Not sure reinstalling will stop the problem of your virus scanner not starting. You need to kill the infection that is stopping those processes.

no luck! 🙁

Panda deleted the irc.coldlife and Swatit caught and cleaned FTP Open Server. I already had system restore off, so after that I rebooted, uninstalled NAV in safe mode, reinstalled NAV, rebooted (NAV can't autoprotect in safe mode), and it STILL won't enable autoprotect! I did all this in addition to all the stuff I mentioned in the 1st post and I'm at a loss as to what to do now.

How can all these antivirus solutions not find all the viruses, worms, trojans I have? My guess would have been Bugbear due to the fact that NAV won't start, but nothing has detected it yet.

Any further ideas guys? 🙁

Nuke it all! And (*cough*) try to resist the bait next time. Make sure your AV software is set to "delete infected files on sight, no questions asked" next time, and make sure it's keeping its virus definitions up-to-date. ZoneAlarm is a great addition to that. Patch your browser and Windows using Windows Update, to help harden all the easy targets.

An ounce of prevention... yeah 😎

If I understand correctly, your Virus Scanner just won't start "Auto Protect" when you get into Windows?

If so, I think I know your problem. Did you disable some items using "MsConfig"? There are two programs that NEED to run in order to Auto-Protect. I'm not at home right now, but they are something like "ccAPP" and I forgot the other one. But they both start with "cc", so see if you disabled those two items from starting up.

EDIT: Be sure to PM me if you have more questions, I can tell you the exact programs when I get to my home computer.

Hey

Keyser, YGPM.

Everyone else, thanks for your help. If I don't get anywhere w/ this I'll probably just end up formatting and making sure to have good prevention measures.

Can anyone recommend a good E-mail program with an address book/contact list and that can handle multiple email accounts that isn't as dangerous as Outlook?

thanks guys!

Did you try downloading the Bugbear removal tool from Symantec? It might do the trick. And I was referring to the virus scanner (manual mode) to scan for viruses in Safe Mode. Sometimes though its just easier to backup what you can and format.....🙁

I just use Outlook Express with my Norton's configured to scan incoming and outgoing mail, if you keep your virus definitions up to date (sometimes takes doing it manually if you read about a new virus) then it works wonders.

well.. i used stinger 1.7 from mcafee which is supposed to remove bugbear and i used other scanners in safe mode to remove the above listed viruses but no bugbear ever came up and i still cant enable virus scanners....

I'll try it anyway just incase... but luckily i picked up the $35 80gb drive from the Hot Deals forum.

Still waiting on a return PM from Keyzer, til I get the new drive.

It frustrates me to no end that I couldnt fix this problem though 😛
