Virus Protection Not Found

This computer had Norton, I removed it with SymNRT which is Norton's Removal Tool.

I installed Avast and upon the initial reboot after installing Avast it knows and sees that there is an antivirus program installed but upon rebooting, the Security Center goes back to saying there is no virus protection found.

This is Windows XP Home SP2 BTW.
 
Well actually Avast does count as I've installed it onto several computers and have not had this problem pop up in a while. Just can't recall what I did the last time to figure it out.
