virus/network/cable internet kinda question

Ok, didn't know exactly where to post this so I thought I would try here.

Guy has a computer that constantly gets viruses. I format, put win 2k on it, virus again and again. I get tired of this and the guy says just build him a new box so I do. I build him a duron 1300, ecs, 256 pc133, just a real basic box. It is running win 2k with norton 2002.

I drop the computer off and hook everything up. Reboot after getting everything configured and all is good. I get a call today saying that he now has a virus after going to just one website. He didn't check his email or anything, just a college sports website.

Is it possible for a virus to come through like this repeatedly? He just has a cable modem plugged directly into his box with no firewall at all. I'm going to try to get rid of the virus and install Zone Alarm but I don't understand how this is happening and this is why I posted it in the networking forum.

Thanks,

Jeff

Are you patching Win2k fully and making sure no services are running unncessecarily? Like IIS?

I bet he's got a floppy disk that's infected and he keeps using it. 🙂 However NAV should prevent any infections of that type.

What virus is it?
It has been many different ones but I can't remember the exact ones right now.
What software does he run typically?
All he claims to have done is go to two websites, google and IHSA sports page. There is no software installed on this except for like windows, office, norton, adobe.

I have every single windows update/driver/everything downloaded and updated. Virus definitions are all up to date. Is IIS enabled by default because if it is then it is running otherwise it is not.

Floppy disk thing may be a possibility, will check and get back to this thread.

Pretty sure IIS isn't installed by default in Win2k.

You could of course easily check whether he's only gone to TWO websites besides google and the sports site, and verify he doesn't have any other apps installed like Kazaa. It really sounds like he's just doing something stupid like clicking yes to anything that pops up, or downloading trojans.

If the computer has good AV and the sigs are up to date, then he shouldnt be getting infected, just quarentined. If that is the case, let the AV do it's job and not worry about it. If it is quarentined, he isnt infected.
MIhgt be a good idea for him to at least get a router, even better, one that does at least SPI.

Also, make sure he has file sharing disabeld as he may be getting hit with opaserv or one of the other viri that spreads thru network shares.

if he's using the same email address on the new box that he had on the old box, which would make perfect sense, then maybe someone who has his email address in their address book is sending him an email virus, such as KLEZ, and his AV is picking it up when it comes in.
