Hey all,
We had this one person in the office read an email (sent from a stranger, no less) that said of a horrible virus on your hard drive. It asked for them to locate manually (since Norton wouldn't recognize it) and to delete it manually.
It asked the person to search for "jdbgmgr.exe" Of ocurse this person found it and was able to delete it. She passed the note to others in the group and beyond. I think 15-20 people deleted the file as well.
It turns out that this is one cruel hoax. Of course people will find the file. It's on about every system that loads Java. And of course, Norton won't detect it as a virus, because the file isn't one! So now we've got our network admin going around replacing this file.
It just goes to show that you should never trust what you read in your email box, especially from strangers. I know people are well intentioned, but if they don't fully understand the implication of their actions, they shouldn't make such actions until they get the go-ahead from someone they trust in the IT field.
cheers,
