Hello,

It seems my wife's laptop will no longer boot. I believe she failed to allow her antivirus to update continually...it was acting strangely so I ran a scan on it with AntiVir. It was loaded with crap..virus and other stuff...

After the scan fully completed it quarantined the infected files...Upon reboot I got this message.

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: /windows\system32\config\system..

it then goes on to tell me how to repair it with my windows setup disc..

I tried booting to the setup disc and hit r at the setup screen....but I don't know what to do next? Should I just re-install windows??? I don't want to reformat because she has photos and the like on it..

thanks,
Chappie

The problem with a Repair Intall is its main advantage and its main disadvantage: It will leave previously installed programs as-is. That could include spyware and viruses, too.

The guaranteed fix is to copy the photos, email, and other valuable documents to another computer or to an external USB hard drive. Then do a full re-install of Windows and your application programs.

After the re-install, use the external drive to make ongoing backups of her system. There are several disk image programs that will let you painless restore the system to a pre-damaged state next time you have this problem.
