Virus, EDIT: Back in business!

I have been very careful to never get a virus, however it has happened. It came from my parents computer which has had this virus (worm actually) for three or four months now. It didnt affect it too much. I was messing around with my network and shaired my c: drive (WITH OUT A PASSWORD!) and the virus (W32.Opaserv.worm) found its way to my main cruncher (my own computer). I also obtained another virus (W95.spaces.1445) from the same source this virus sounds like a really bad one and on June 1st it corrupts the HDD. I bought a 60gb external hard drive to backup my data. Now I am left with my sisters 1.2ghz celeron (10hr/wu) to crunch. We are going to take both affected computers to a shop to have them fix it (reformat most likely), I could do it but I just couldnt wipe it clean myself (mentaly 🙁).

A few questions:

1. I bought the external HDD so that I could back up my files. The virus wont affect these files, will it? dont they only affect system files?
2. Have any of you had this virus/worm.

I just formated the external hdd and am now running scan disk on through (as it suggested), and that will take a while. I'll let you know more when more gets done😉. Wish me luck.

I'm back up and crunching on all three legs!

Here is the HDD I bought. It is both USB 2.0 and Firewire. It's a 60gb 5400rpm and it cost $140 after mail in rebates. I have been looking for a drive like this for along time (great price, high capacity and firewire/usb). I recomend it if you want some extra storage/backup.

Virus' suck! :|

Titanmiller,

Disconnect all infected computers from your network.

1. For the virus W32.Opaserv.worm why don't you try running the standalone removal tool from Symantec? Instructions are on the linked page you gave. Follow the step by step instructions.

2. If you have anti-virus software, update the virus definition files on a non-infected PC, then create a Rescue disk. Use that disk to scan all the computers.

3. If you don't have anti-virus software, download AVG from Grisoft (It's free) onto a non-infected PC, create a Rescue Disk, and then run a scan on the infected PCs.

4. Once cleaned, do a full, all files scan of the entire hard drive of each infected PC.

It isn't always necessary to wipe the hard drive and start over. Clean the hard drive, and then if system files are corrupted, or there is still erratic behavior, save off important data then wipe the hard drive.

Since these have been out for a bit, I'm guessing your parents aren't running antivirus software, or haven't keep the definition files up to date. You need to impress upon them the importance of keeping those definitions up to date, and running a scan at minimum every week. (I run an automated scan every day during the least used time).

I would recommend running anti-virus software (and keep it up to date) on every PC on the network. I do, even for my crack rack nodes.

Good luck!

Yeah I recovered from the win32.cih(?) virus without having to format.

I would scan that external drive and make sure the files on it aren't infected.

I had this a few months ago. I got rid of it with symantecs removal tool. Here is the thread from 2 months ago Virus attack the advice in this thread helped me a lot.

Yep, what they said! Do you guys have dialup or broadband? Either way AVG can be set to update itself. I have dialup and it dials automatically every 10 days and updates.

I'm paranoid. I run PC-Cillin and I autoupdate every 10 min:Q

What is amazing is sometimes I'll get 5 or more updates in a day!!

I love it. Real easy to use and free in amost every MB I buy.

Wowzers! What a coincidence, my virus scanner just found Klez.H in an email. I haven't ran a full systems scan since 10/28/02. I'm going to do that now.

I just started the Trend Micro online scanner. Hopefully that will resolve some of the problems. I need to reformat anyway though because I have other problems that have accumulated over time.

I would suggest running the Symantec standalone virus cleaner proggies that scan/clean just 1 virus each. I've had good results with them, especially the virus/worms that disable antivirus software. I downloaded the boatload to CD, and everyonce in awhile I update it. I use them on friends and customer's PCs that are infected. Then I can reload the antivirus software.

Ya never can be too careful... 😉

I think I got the W95.spaces.1445 cleaned off and the W32.opaserv.worm is going to be out the door soon. I think that I will still reformat though because I have other problems that need to be resolved. And with 3dMark03 right around the corner a fresh copy of windows wouldnt hurt.😉

I ended up reformating my main computer. It is quite the chore to install everything all over again, especially since I have had this computer for nearly 2 years now. Also I just set my new record 3dMark score of 7950 beating my previous best of 7908!

Victory atlast! I had to reinstall Windows on my main computer and all seemed well until I noticed that the virus was still there! I was disconected from the network so it must have survived the reinstall. I downloaded the removal tool from sarc and cleaned it out. I did the same for my 1.5WU/day cruncher and all seems well for it.😀
