Virus ate my PC and now Windows ME is dead. Can we revive it??

I have a friend that was using no antivirus software, I know it starts out bad. He got a virus that rendered his system to where it would not boot. I took out his hdd and cleaned it with my antivirus from my pc and then I burned his data on cd's.

Now comes the question. I use w98 se and if I had the same problem, usually I could run setup from a dos boot and it would fix my pc. He has me and also a dell. If dell gave him a system restore cd, then I guess he starts out at square one. If they gave him a me cd, can I reinstall it and if so how? so that it does not wipe out everything.

Do not even think about the roll back feature of me. This was tried, but he evidently has had the virus too long and it cannot be rolled back that far.

Have I got to wipe it out and start from scratch??? lmk

Thanks

Do yourself a BIG favor and do a reformat and fresh install. You will save yourself a lot of headaches. As for the Dell restore disk, I don't believe that it will work for you in that it would most likely be propriatary to that Dell machine. If I read you question correctly, then why would you want to use ME, unless you enjoy headaches up the ying-yang? If possible, use another op-sys like W2K. You will be much better off.

Hate to say it, but that Virus was prolly the best thing that happened to that $h!tty OS...

On the other hand hope your buddy didnt lose any files, good luck, and have fun this weekend!

Let us know if a run into troubles!

dont use your restore disk, my girlfriend's parents made that problem and i had to spend my week fixing it. Basically, there were some things it overwrote, but others it left alone. It didnt fix their virus problem, it just left them with an even further gimped system.

The restore disk came with the dell, so I should be able to use it. I thought of doing an upgrade to XP. I can try to help him reformat and reinstall ME, but I have purposely avoided it and know nada about ME. I guess the coices would be XP, Win98 se or go back with me. I will tell him. Sounds like a lot of work for us either way.

Thanks

Just boot from the restore disk and see how it goes...Restores go pretty quick and if all else fails and it does not work, you can wipe the drive clean and go from there. I know that Hewlett-Packard WinME restore disks give you the option of just re-installing without formatting or installing w/formatting. I had to do a restore on my folks' HP machine and it worked fine.
