VirtualBox security

Hey all

Recently I had a sudden interest to try Linux. I'm using VirtualBox on Windows XP to emulate Xubuntu. I have AVG anti-virus, Comodo firewall, spybot, ad-aware, etc (all the free stuff) installed on Windows. So far, I haven't encountered any security problems that I'm aware of. On Xubuntu, I only have AVG installed. Does running virtual Xubuntu make my computer any less secure? Would browsing the net under Xubuntu using Firefox be any safer than under Windows? Do I need some kind of anti-spyware for the VM too? Is there anything else security-related I should be concerned about?

Any feedback is appreciated

If it's XP Pro try VirtualPC 2007 from Microsoft. If there is a security issue then it will only affect that virtual machine not your whole PC. I've run DOS, OpenSUSE 10, and Fedora this way fine and it's free...

Frankly I wouldn't have even installed AVG in Linux, Linux antiviruses are really only useful on systems that will be transfering files to/from Windows machines since there's a distinct lack of Linux viruses out there.

For now just ignore all of the normal crap you have to do to Windows regularly (antivirus, antispyware, defrag, reboot, etc) and just spend time learning the system.
