Virtual window for large high res screen

Ok so for large high res screen, when you maximize a window, it goes to the full length of the screen, is there a way to create some virtual window so you can split the screen into like 2 or 4 squares and have each program snap into that section?

this way when you double click it'll go to 1 side of the screen not the full screen..

any one ?

sort of like this but if theres an ability to assign which app goes where.. it would be awesome
