For the purpose of running a game server (Arma) I want to create a temporary servers that we only start up when we play, something like a few hours a week because we don't really need to be spending to have a dedicated server sitting there all week. Most of the Virtual server providers I find around the web either don't say what CPUs they use or they use low clock speed AMD servers (like 1.6-2.2Ghz) and are heavily geared towards web apps and RAM requirements.
What I want is something like:
- An Intel 3.0 Ghz processor ideally but the faster the better
- Windows
- 2 Physical underlying cores
- Charged by the minute/hour
- About 20GB at least of free storage with it
The problem is that Arma is very CPU dependent, it only uses 2 cores but to be able to play with any reasonable number of players it really needs an Intel CPU as they seem to have optimised it a lot in Intel's CPU. What I am wondering is does anyone know of a VPS provider with a European datacentre that meets these sorts of requirements?
So far the best I have found is transip.eu which I used last year. They have 2.4Ghz Xeons and their 4x package gives us 4 threads/2 cores, enough RAM and storage but its a total of about 20 Euro a month (first month is 10 Euro) and they don't have an appropriate VPS solution just this partial monthly renting solution.
Amazon EC2 uses mostly AMD CPUs and quite low speed ones so its not really suitable for this application. It works and it will work up to about 14 players and probably costs about $1-2 a game or so but I was hoping for a better solution if someone knows of one.
