Virtual Reality stuff coming up next year

Don't see an active forum for VR stuff, also don't really see much online about the upcoming Sony VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, etc.

Kinda interested in VR myself though haven't tried anything yet. Has anyone here? What are your impressions?

I kind of think because there's a lack of threads talking about VR stuff anywhere, it's not likely going to do much besides totally flop once stuff comes out next year. I'd be kinda surprised though, so many companies throwing billions of dollars at it like they are.

I'm waiting for the Occulus. ANything else i've read about didn't seem like it was ambitious as the OR.

There was a VR thread in the PC Gaming subforum. Looks like FSX can use the Occulus Rift now which would be awesome. Although, my main sim is FS2004 @ 55 GBs thus far. And I don't think it works with the Occulus Rift.

VR should be under displays right?

I don't see VR really taking off as it is released. It's going to take a while I think for solid material is released for the medium.

It seems like we talked VR stuff like the Oculus Rift to death in the beginning. Then things kept dragging on and on with the development, and we talked about each new iteration of the development kits. Things kept dragging on and we talked about what sony and microsoft and others were eventually doing with VR. Things kept dragging on and now I think we're all just waiting expectantly, with not a lot left to talk about until a product comes out.

I was initially planning on the Oculus, but the HTC Vive sounds even better. This is the first tech-related thing I've really gotten excited about in like a year or two

I'm still not convinced its not a gimmick like the Wii or 3d TV. Will it be disorienting or will it work as shown on real games on real PCs or will it work great but simply isolate you too much especially around roommates, significant others, kids and such.
Microsoft's Hololens augmented reality seems smarter to me.

I am a fan of Google cardboard and the Samsung VR headset.

To me pre-recording content is where it will be at for a while. The GPU power to create a VR world at anywhere near modern console fidelity simply isn't on the market. Which is bad for VR, as gamers are probably the most enthusiastic early adopters.

Yeah, but I have a lot of fun with iPhone games, plus stuff like Minecraft is hugely popular, so they could really do a lot of fun stuff with it if they wanted to. Even stuff like Starfox would be really neat with a 3D headset.

Actually, you know what would be awesome with pre-recorded content? Time Crisis! Remember that old arcade game? That would be perfect because they could set it up on rails in the game, but you could still spin around. Combine that with an Omni station & you're in business!

Yeah but is it fun enough to buy a $1500 pair of glasses and a gaming rig near that price? The early entry fee for VR will be massive.

Yeah, that's the downside. I haven't built a computer for home use in years (my Hackintosh from like, I dunno, 2011 is still rock-solid), but the gaming PC required to drive the dual screens is $$$, so I'd basically have to build a new one from scratch. And without much in the way of content just yet...meh.

I feel you. A gaming PC is a huge leap above a good enough desktop, and a VR gaming PC will be a leap beyond that. I hope someone pays the price so we get second and third gen versions.

Also that reminds me, thanks for all the Hackintosh guides back in the day. You were my hero before I was more active on the forum.

No killer app yet. Until someone makes a game as revolutionary as Doom or WoW or Battlefield 1942 to take full advantage of the new VR capabilities it will remain an incredibly cool but small diversion.

Hah, you're welcome! Those were good times. I should update the guide over the holidays, at least just to point to the latest tools...it's pretty easy now with all of the great software out there. I helped a buddy build one recently and it basically boiled down to (1) buy off Tonymac's list of well-supported hardware, (2) install Unibeast, and (3) install Multibeast. Rock-solid, super fast, no installation headaches like in the past (supported hardware + excellent install tools = win!).

It's funny because now my primary computer is a small Chromebook. Love it! The only thing I really use my Hackintosh for is video editing these days. I'm holding out for an Atom X7 mini PC to use as a lightweight gaming PC on my TV, but that's about it. So all of this 3D headset stuff looks really interesting...just a huge up-front investment for a gaming PC powerful enough to run it all. I would LOVE to play Portal on one

This is kinda how i feel. There isn't any specific game or ...experience or whatever driving up excitement.

I'm just hoping it will take off, even if slowly. I love the idea of a cyberpunk future, but then stuff like snow crash and ready player one have likely had a lasting effect on me since i've read both.

Yeah it has gotten really easy. I don't even use Tonymac's stuff anymore, Clover alone pretty much does the job.

I feel you there, most of my computing has shifted to mobile devices and I only use the Hackintosh when I need to do something with a mouse. As of this year I have been hackintoshing for a decade and its still a lot of fun even if it isn't nearly as hard as back then. At the time I saw OSX as my 10 year answer on the desktop. Seeing as how I am lukewarm about Windows 10 it might end up being a 20 year answer for me. :)

I don't give one good goddamn about "virtual reality". The tech stinks, just like 3D for anybody who has corrective lenses. Gives a lot of people headaches. I'm one of them (plus I wear glasses, AND I have different vision in each eye).

Augmented reality is far and away way more interesting and useful than "VR". Especially when they start building it into the glasses I already wear.
