I got a pair of those VR goggles for my smartphone this Christmas. I wasn't that impressed.

Interesting but this looks like you need to use specific cartridges for specific smells. I was thinking maybe it was like "RGB" but for smells and you could get anything from using 3 specific chemicals or something. That would be rather interesting. Smellovision! :D

I guess in a game or something you could have some kind of cartridge loader that quickly loads the appropriate cartridge for the situation you're in.

Of course the first thing people think to use this for is porn lol.

Probably need about 400 in order to produce the 1 trillion types of smells we are able to detect.

That's kind of what I was thinking you probably need quite a lot of base smells to create any other smell. Unless someone somehow discovers a way to need less.

I'm no biochemist, but I think receptors get triggered almost like an on-off switch.

Hmmm maybe smells could be virtualized through some kind of digital interface that triggers the receptors. You'd get an implant and a USB cable would just plug into your nose. Universal Smell Bus. :D
