Virtual memory / HDD questions (for DV)...

What would be an ideal IDE, non-raid setup for a DV system (or any system for that matter)

I am planning on getting at least 1-2GB of RaM and disabling virtual memory..
-quicker access?

I am planning on getting the smallest possible 7200rpm ide HDD for the OS and DV editing programs... (~10GB)
-dedicated drive for proggies / smaller the drive the quicker the access?

... and finally at least an 80GB 7200rpm ata133 HDD for storage and workspace.
-maybe another large, slow drive for storage.

Now, would I be better off getting (2)20GB 7200rpm ata133 drives and striping them? Then settle with a 160GB for storage?

*I will NOT go SCSI, ata133 is close enough*

Just a note: Smaller does not mean faster and vice versa

Larger disks (usually more advanced) have a higher areal density, coupled with fast RPM like 7200 can read data just as
fast as a small 10GB 7200 drive (which I don't think even exists?)

Higher areal density means more data (gigabits) can be read in one square inch, which is one major factor in performance.

And of course performance degradation as you get to the center (end) of the disk is the same in both small and large size HDs.

so which disk has the best areal density?

I know IBMs do, but they are crud right now...

...and how about the disabling virtual memory? Is 1GB RaM enough or should I get 1.5-2?

What OS are you using? 2000/XP won't allow you disable the pagefile. Not a big deal, it will always benefit from more RAM and use it to its full extent.

Depending on what you do 1GB may be enough. What kind of files (size) and programs do you work with?

I like Maxtor drives and WD. There are some nice large HDs out from both companies that will suite you fine.
