Why is a Windows 10 virtual machine slow with VMware Workstation, i5 2500k, Samsung 512 GB SSD, 8 GB of ram ?

I give it at least 2 GB of ram.

Might help us if you told us what you mean with slow.
What is the host, did you install vmtools,is the virtual hard disk on the ssd and so on,2Gb is a tad low to run windows 10.

As in when copying files from my host machine to the VM, dragging and dropping. Installing windows updates. etc

Host is Windows 10 64 bit. Yes I installed vmtools. Yes the VM is on the SSD.

Would it be better for me to run Windows 7 with 2 GB of ram ?

Look at resources on the host and guest when it's slow.

Is an AV scan running/scanning? Is another app using a lot of processor or drive when the slowness occurs?

Is the SSD getting thrashed during the slowness?

Well this is simulated network transfer and it is always slow.
Better to create an iso on the host with all the files you want and mount this in the VM.
Or just download it from cloud or the net in general.
