Virtual Machine - Öhhmm.??? Impossible to find

Hej

I was just wondering, since I have this report I've gotta do for school... I have to do a homepage (no problem) about a specific subject and that subject is Virtual Machine. What the hell is VM? Does anyone know where I can find anything that describes VM? It seems as if I can find only things that is about programming VM..

That doesn't help.
Anyway if you know something about it/where I can find info I'd really appreciate if you told me........
