Virtual LAN over Internet?

Hey everybody... rainy day here in NY, so it's time to mess with the internet!! So I have an interesting question.... is there any way to set up a fake LAN over the internet? That is, can I fool applications into thinking that a remote computer is actually on a local network so that, for instance, some friends and I could set up a LAN party from our homes?

The only difference between a LAN and the Internet is the number of hops, if you're playing a network game that uses TCP/IP it should just work, if you need to use IPX that'll be a lot more work.

I realize this; I've played many an internet game. There are a few that would be made easier if they thought they were in a LAN.... yet this is more an academic question. Can it be done, and how?
