The allegations arose in an Amnesty International report, published weeks after the March 9 protest. It claimed female demonstrators were beaten, given electric shocks, strip-searched, threatened with prostitution charges and forced to submit to virginity checks.

At that time, Maj. Amr Imam said 17 women had been arrested but denied allegations of torture or "virginity tests."

But now a senior general who asked not to be identified said the virginity tests were conducted and defended the practice.

"The girls who were detained were not like your daughter or mine," the general said. "These were girls who had camped out in tents with male protesters in Tahrir Square, and we found in the tents Molotov cocktails and (drugs)."

The general said the virginity checks were done so that the women wouldn't later claim they had been raped by Egyptian authorities.

"We didn't want them to say we had sexually assaulted or raped them, so we wanted to prove that they weren't virgins in the first place," the general said. "None of them were (virgins)."

A flimsy excuse if I ever saw one. Egypt, you used to be the height of human civilization. First step to reclaiming that is going to be pulling your heads from your collective rectums.

Careful what you wish for Egypt. Mubarak was a dirt bag but things, it you are not careful, could get a lot worse.

Too bad there's no way to check someone's virginity medically.

Hymen has nothing to do with virginity either.

We are talking about a region of the world that actively discourages education, remember.

How the hell does that make sense ?

You check to see if they're virgins, find out that they're not, and this proves you didn't rape them how ?

Americans calling the Islamic world fucked up is like the pot calling the kettle black.

LOL. These unproven new Muslim "democracies" are a joke. But I still support democracy there because now it's one less thing (a dictator) they can blame their failures on when they should realize it's their backwards religion and culture that is to blame.

I would argue that the act of checking a hymen is in itself, rape.

I live in a country that calls torture "enhanced interrogation", that has indefinitely suspended our constitutional rights, that has the largest prison population in the world, that has the highest homicide, STD, and abortion rates in the developed world. Where cops can now bust down your door on a whim and shoot you. At least Muslims have the excuse of living in the third world!

Yeah, and what was their method of testing? Rape them, now they clearly aren't virgins, so clearly they weren't before? Sounds plausible.

Absolutely disgusting.

You do realize that if you lived in one of those shithole countries, saying what you're saying about your current country would probably get you stoned or shot.

Up until this point I thought you had a clue.

If you honestly draw a comparison between the Islamic world and the US and find the US on an equal footing or worse, then it speaks to your foolishness.

So you see the glass as half-empty. There aren't any positives that you can find in this country that outweigh the negatives? You're really putting the US on the same level as any one of these shithole countries?

I listened to a documentary regarding cultural practices that we traditionally think of belonging to Islam. They really do not. In some areas, Hindus, Muslims, whatever (think backwater areas in the disputed regions around India / Pakistan) both practice things like killing a woman for "letting herself be raped" and to "preserve the honor of the family" if a father gets his daughter pregnant and then kills her.

Islam has actually been a mitigating factor to the indigenousness culture in some regions. Roman historians and other, independent, sources have described the nasty things that the Phoenicians (including their colonies abroad) used to do (like burn their newborn children alive). Abrahamic religion helped stamp stuff like this out completely. But, certain cultural aspects still persist and will fade in time. Without Islam, I think the situation in some of these countries would be much worse, maybe with time the residual leftovers from their old ways will dissipate.

Yes, because living in the 3rd world isn't of their own doing at all.

I suppose you would rather live in countries that call torture "standard interrogation", that has no Constitutional rights of any meaning, that has the largest religious radical and terrorist population in the world (walking the streets freely mind you), and that tend to have higher homicide and STD rates as well as stone rape victims on a regular basis.

Oh yeah, the USA is far worse.

You sir, are an idiot and a troll.
