Good choice in Virginia Tech! I was in the first class to graduate with a degree in BIT (vs Management Science) and loved the major. I loved the theory behind the major "Using computers to solve business problems." Its a cross functional major where you learn how the basics of computer programming, but also have a solid foundation in Business and analytics. I would guess that you are looking at the Decision Support Systems track (verses operations management). I did the DSS option and my background is of immense help right now being a business analyst in a technical group. The programming languages I learned was: C++, VB, VBA, and Java. In addition to the standard busines curriculum, there are courses in business data analysis and strategy. Its also a popular major for CS dropouts
My in-major friends are now working in a variety of fields including IT consulting, Business Programming, Human Computer Interaction (ie GUI design), and the lovely catch all: Business Analyst.
I can't believe that I didn't talk about the atmosphere the first time! Its a great small campus town with so much to do near by from hiking the AT, bike riding, rafting on the New River, fishing, and general outdoor life. The campus is great, very open, but organized (academics one side, residential other side) and there's a VERY strong school spirit. I loved being there and go back regularly for the football games. I almost wish I took a 5th year just to be down there another year!
And of course the biggest advantage to going to VT over UVa is that VT wins most of the football (and now many basketball) games in the in state rivalry.
GO HOKIES!
