You know, no one ever says "We thought we missed my exit and were a little lost so I slowed up a bit to let a truck get ahead of me so I could see where I was." Oh, that's because they wouldn't have gotten a ticket for big bucks and be moaning here.

That is probably why the cop wrote him the ticket for reckless driving instead of just an over 80 MPH ticket. They have had a real problem on 81 with the massive increase in truck traffic. They have discretion when writing tickets for over 80 to write it in a way that you only pay the fine and don't have to go to court but from what the OP says the cop didn't write his ticket that way.
Yup, a friend of mine was passing through the Roanoke area on that road and the cop just gave her an 80 even though he clocked her at 82 to give her a break. You have to really piss off the cop to have him write up the actual speed above 80. This just happened this past Monday morning around 6am, it could have even been the same cop! lol

Heh, or you get a ticket in NoVA, which he'll write down exactly what you were doing...

Anyway, I thought I freaked out when I found out it was a misdemeanor... just get a freaking lawyer in the area. And no, you weren't "arrested." I sure as hell wasn't, and mine was worse than yours.

I dunno how many points I got transferred over because I refuse to pay $15 to the DMV to look up my own damn driving record.

You can look up your record on the General District Court site. It should have exactly what you were convicted of and the points for that you can get from the DMV web site.

Although I agree that the fines are excessive, people drive like idiots in this state, especially in and around the DC area.

That would have triggered a much larger penalty.

what were you doing driving without paying attention to the speed limit signs.
they are posted at 65; you chose to ignore them and run at 75 which is what most people hope is under the 10 mph trigger. Then you pushed pass the trigger point and got caught.
You can ignore the ticket and hope that the next time you need to either renew your license or get caught, the state will not check their records to see if VA reported it.

Because if they reported it; then you can lose your license on the spot until you get paperwork from VA showing that you have cleared up the issue.

this may have worked 30 years ago, but tickets can show up and affect you in other states today.

still depends on the states involved

i got one 2 years ago in PA for going 75 in a 45
never showed up in NY, just had to pay a massive fine

If he ignores the ticket as Common Courtesy [edit] mentioned, he WILL have his license suspended in PA according to the PA driver's manual.

Was this Virginia? and was it recent?

Apparently I slightly lucked out getting pulled over in Southern Virginia. Apparently in Northern and DC Area Virginia jail sentences and severe fines are common.

Jail sentences just for speeding? I've never heard of that, and I've lived in NoVa for 30+ years. I've gotten a few speeding tickets up here, and it was always just a fine.

I've gotten a lot of tickets over the years in Northern Virginia and never lost my license much less threatened with jail. During a particularly bad period in 2002 I got 2 tickets in 2 weeks and no jail or anything other than paying the fines.

This wasn't a speeding ticket though. It was a reckless driving: speeding ticket.

Even for that you are not going to go to jail even in NOVA unless there are some serious extenuating circumstances or you have a seriously screwed up record. It depends more on how you deal with the cop than anything else as to how they are going to write the ticket. I got a 73 in a 45 and the cop could have written it as reckless but instead just wrote me a regular speeding ticket. He didn't change the numbers so I still had to pay the fine calculated by the amount over I was actually going but I didn't get stuck with a reckless driving charge on my record.

I have found out to my regret.

A ticket payment was lost and the MO never cashed.
I had moved and found out when attempting to get plates in VA 6 years later. (1989)

Then a ticket was ignored in Tx ('92) and haunted me in Indianna ('00)

NOTE: I am not recommending in the least that he ignore it - just stating what could be the result if he does

If you slow down and let the truck pass you you still can't get over into the other lane because of the SUV, sports car, honda civic, and toyota Camry are all tailgating each other so close that you can't get over.

Often the only way to safely change lanes is to speed up.

It's not loading for me.. but I was more curious as to what MD sees it as. And it's $9/$12, not $15, heh.

Most of I81 is two lanes.
He was going fast, sped up to get around the truck and also did not pay attention to his surroundings.

There are signs indicating how far an exit is (mandated by Federal law on interstates) at least 1/2 mile before the exit.

I don't understand why it is so hard for people to drive the speed limit.

I don't understand why it is so hard to set speed limits that are reasonable and realistic for people to follow.

Give me a break. No matter the speed limit, people are going to go over it. The speed limits are reasonable everywhere I've been, it's not a big deal.

How could you possibly know he didn't pay attention to his surroundings?

1/2 mile is nothing. At 70 mph, which is the legal sped limit on some VA roadways, that gives you less than 30 seconds to get over and exit. The way people drive around here, tailgating so nobody can get in front of them, 30 seconds often isn't enough to change lanes. And slowing down in the left lane to *slower* than the right lane traffic is just plain stupid. You are supposed to pass in the left lane, by slowing down you force people to pass you on the right which creates a dangerous driving condition for everyone.
