(Woodbridge, VA) -- A Woodbridge middle school student faces felony charges after police say he dropped a laxative in a teacher's cup of coffee. The 13-year-old boy who attends Saunders Middle School could serve five to 20 years in prison if convicted. Investigators say the incident happened last Friday, and a teacher became ill shortly after drinking the coffee. WRC-TV reports the boy did it because he thought the teacher didn't like him. The child is in the custody of his parents and has been suspended from school.

I guess it is considered poisoning someone... could be construed as attempted murder.

This is a side effect of product/food tampering laws, mandatory minimums, and bad parenting.

I guess the part that I don't understand is how the teacher felt ill after drinking the coffee/laxative drink. How much could that kid have placed in the coffee? :Q

It would be hard to find a prosecutor willing to charge that offense because the intent of attempted murder was not there. More than likely there will be a plea bargain and no jail or prison time will actually be served. We are looking at a case of Assault and/or product/food tampering. Nothing more and nothing less.

for all we know, maybe the teacher suffered from side effects from the laxatives. Or the idiot kid put more than just laxatives in the coffee

The snippet doesn't mention what charge was brought against the kid, nor is there a source so we can look it up ourselves. (Shame on you, wje!)

I seriously doubt any judge or jury would impose a 20 year sentence; 20 years is the maximum that the kid could get if convicted.

Having said that, I'm glad that charges are being brought. Kids need to understand that there are consequenses of their actions and that while putting a laxative in a drink sounds funny, there could be serious health consequences.

I hope the kid doesn't get jail time; a few dozen hours of comminty service would probably be a sentence that fits the crime. But I'm glad they're bringing charges.

WTF. That's just like the burning bag of dog poop on the doorstep that happened when everybody was a kid, it's just a silly prank. I can see the school taking disciplinary action, but for the legal system to become involved (especially since the defendant is 13 years old) is absurd and a waste of tax money.

I guess you have never pulled that prank on anyone?????

This was a prank. The kid was stupid for doing it to a teacher but it was still just a prank. I know my friends and I pulled some pranks on teachers while in High School. We just made sure to do it to the teachers that had a sense of humor.

OMG, this is just silly. Unless the kid dumped a bottle in the coffee then it isn't going to be fatal. The keyword in that article is OVERDOSE. As long as you follow the recommended dose you will be fine.

If the kid did dump a large amount in the coffee then the teacher is just retarded for not tasting it.

So its the teachers fault?

Next thing you will say is its the persons fault for getting shot at the bank, they KNOW banks get robbed why didn't they were their bullet proof jacket.

The kid, like most criminals, will get a slap on the wrest and be kicked out of school for the year. Of course how much you wanna bet this is not the last time he will be heard from

of course I pull pranks on people before... but doing something that have the potential to harm someone is over the line.

I put my co workers' pic on match.com and had 2-3 chicks emailing him...that's funny. I slip in naked pictures of guy under his keyboard and people had good laugh thinking that was the janitor trying to pick him up. all that is funny...

perhaps YOU enjoy getting sick from drinking laxative... i don't.

I guess I am a criminal too for pulling PRANKS. I never said it was the teachers fault. They were the victim of a PRANK. Ever heard of the word PRANK. It usually isn't considered a serious offense. He should be pushed by some in school suspension and made to do some community service. The only reason I think that should be the punishment is because he was stupid in picking his victim of the prank. He needs to learn when certain things are appropriate.

You people are out for murder on this kid for a silly prank. There are much better things we need to worry about like kids having sex in school. Kids bringing weapons to school.

This kid was just stupid on picking his victim. Of course I would have never pulled the laxative prank on a teacher. I would have picked a less mean prank but it really isn't a big deal IMO.

Like I stated I pulled pranks on teachers but that was when we had good relationships in class and I knew they would take it well.

EDIT::: Another thing. I doubt the kid knew it could make the teacher SERIOUSLY SICK. I have pulled off the laxative trick on some of my old roommates that kept eatting my food. They just spent a few hours in the bathroom that day during and between classes.

A prank that went too far is the key here...

say, someone is running, you stick your foot out... he slips... got up..you laught about it....

what if he slips and hit his head and dies? is it still a prank?
okay, what if he brokes his arm? a prank?
a little scratch?

the teacher in question got sick...that's the point....
if the teacher wasn't affect at all... perhaps we wouldn't hear anything about it. maybe the kid will try again with a larger dose?
