Virginia issues some police reforms. Not defunding.

If you're a liberal you will probably like this. If you're a conservative, you will probably not.
If you have a brain, you will probably wait and see.
:D

For those who dont know, last year they had a major sweep in the state legislature.

How is the popo supposed to keep order under these draconian restrictions? How many good (white)people will die now because the police are handcuffed? The criminals are already planning their Virginia invasion.

If you have a brain you make intelligence a protected class when it comes to applying for critical jobs like law enforcement, instead of all this feel good legislation that dances around the foundational problem of purposefully hiring less intelligent applicants to become police officers because they are expected to be nothing more than militarized foot soldiers in a civilian environment that don't question policies and procedures.

Doesn't seem unreasonable. The not shooting at a moving vehicle rule could be problematic, but it seems that would be a rare set of circumstances.

The only people talking about "defunding the police" are Trump, Fox News and the rest of the right wing media maggots.

So... a big nothingburger?

No end to qualified immunity. No reduction... Just a finger wag and saying "Don't do that again /wink /wink"

They will continue to do what they do.

If the police are not allowed to do their jobs, militia will form and do it instead.
Law will be replaced by anarchy.

But I will not comment on whether Virginia's specific reform hurts the police or not. I honestly do not know. I just look at cities like Seattle or Portland and see how they have failed.

They failed at policing long before the protests started. That's why the protests happened at all.

Why are people angry at the police to begin with?

LEOs should want police reform that actually keeps them out of situations they aren't best suited for and creates healthier relationships with the public so that they're safer. There are some locales that have gotten police buy-in for reform, but that doesn't appear to be very common right now. Political divisions are just making it worse. We need to first agree that there is a problem we have a common interest in solving. We'll disagree about where it started, the scope of the problem, and what to do about it. But if we can't ally that there is something worth trying to fix we are hopeless.

Because despite being given the trust of the public to have a monopoly on force, the police are rife with corruption, are prone to excessive violence, and are accountable to almost no one with society bearing directly the costs of their mistakes. That's why people are angry. With great power comes great responsibility.

I think those are a reasonable start to reforms that are needed. Then go back and evaluate as it goes along and make further adjustments as needed.
