My bad, apparently he was the Exalted Cyclops. I'm not up on klan ranks or absurd names.

Then you should probably do a little more research. The right wing lie is he was. Not reality.

He did start his own Klan chapter and was elected Exalted Cyclops

"In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Sophia, West Virginia.[10][11]

According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, "You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd later recalled, "Suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[17] Byrd became a recruiter and leader of his chapter.[11] When it came time to elect the top officer (Exalted Cyclops) in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.[11]

In December 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore G. Bilbo:

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944[11][18]

In 1946, Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating, "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."[19] However, when running for the United States House of Representatives in 1952, he announced "After about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization. During the nine years that have followed, I have never been interested in the Klan." He said he had joined the Klan because he felt it offered excitement and was anti-communist.[11]"

He left the group and pretty much redeemed himself in later years but it does seem his involvement was more than a simple youthful fling of a few months.

I thought he was a grand wizard or something like that?

He was briefly elected the leader of the local group he helped found in 1944, iirc.

Anybody who wants to talk about Robert Byrd really needs to know more than that, stuff like this-

President Barack Obama said, "His profound passion for that body and its role and responsibilities was as evident behind closed doors as it was in the stemwinders he peppered with history. He held the deepest respect of members of both parties, and he was generous with his time and advice, something I appreciated greatly as a young senator."

It's all distractional bullshit from the usual suspects- "You're the Real Racists!" & so forth.

Can you name one thing in this world that you don’t like which isn’t a liberal’s fault?

One thing. Take your time.

The USA is the fault of (many) liberals. ...he does claim to like the USA! (god help us all...)

I mean...liking something that is the fault of liberals is different, but the same, right?

Probably not. The legislature is majority GOP. They'd end up with a black governor & it's great fun watching the Dems chewing on their own neck.

Not by much and there are few things the GOP loves more than pretending they aren’t racist assholes when a Democrat is at issue.

It's not a distraction at all, and it's not bullshit. The point that a few here have made is that Byrd was a ranking member of the KKK, that's not fake news, and there is no way to whitewash that into anything but racism at it's worst. He was forgiven. Now, many years later, people are calling for the removal of a congressmen because he once wore black face.

It's fine thing that Byrd turned his life around, why doesn't the other guy get the same chance?
The odd thing about this is I don't really give a shit if he stays or goes, he's just another congresscritter and the next one might or might not be any better. I simply don't like the idea of anyone being ruined over a foolish stunt 35 years ago.

Because doing something like an armed robbery or 3 is entirely forgiveable, but realizing you were stupid in joining a racist group is just reprehensible. No forgiveness 4u!

Wrong approach, for what exactly?

Nothing he says or does will change this outcome. So... someone has convinced him to make a final stand on deniability. To save as much face as humanly possible. Probably so those that can live with him in that bubble will still speak to him. However small and minuscule that crowd will be.

He's just here to concern troll Dems, that's his schtick

Am I the only one who doesn't think we should judge a 60 year old's character by things he did as a brash 20-something? Does anyone believe in character development, personal improvement, and repentance?

Do we know this was a Halloween party? Its not like there haven't been so called "Ghetto Parties" where participants can make fun of black people
I've never heard of a Ghetto Party. Are they popular up north? I'm from Georgia originally and I've never heard of it.
Same.

There are block parties in my town (apparently). Nobody making fun of black people.

Did it occur to you it isn't the medias fault bur Republicans do shitty opposition research? Back to your troll hole

There it is. Admitting that the vast majority of media are lefties. Thanks. They dug through every single thing they could find, or make up over Kav, didnt even do basic research for this guy.

Since you race bait and ignore actual racism all the time when it goes against your lefties, I see you (and others here) once again ignored (and didnt post) about what Maher said just the other day. But I guess making fried chicken jokes about black people is a-ok huh? Only if the guy making it is on the left, and the guy the joke was against is on the right and black. This is current racism, not from black and white picture days. But just like when Hillary said that all black people look alike, you ignore actual racism.

Dont even pretend that if it were a rightie that you would have ignored it. And neither would the media. Which is why you are the biggest race baiter on these forums. And ignore racism when its against someone on the right. You and others dont give a shit about racism, or bigotry. If you did, you would call it out far more often no matter what in one of you many, many, many topics. Racism in any form, against any race, is wrong. But not according to you and some others here. Certain types of people get passes all the time for it. While others dont. Proves your bias and lack of true caring. I dont even know why I bring up facts to you, you'll ignore and name call, and continue on your way of faking. /d

What's amazing is that it hadn't been leaked before. Any of his old classmates must have kept on old yearbook laying around somewhere, and I'm sure some of them remembered the photo - that image is kinda hard to un-see and forget. Northam's career in politics has pretty much coincided with the social media age, so it's remarkable that he made it this far without being exposed already. I guess it's only in the past few months that his profile has been big enough for his opponents to care.

His insistence he's not in the photos is bizarre. Watching the press conference. Hearing this guy talk about impersonating Michael Jackson at a talent show is cringe-inducing beyond belief. His vocal delivery and body language also remind me of George W. Bush. He should resign. He shouldn't have is medical license revoked or his life ruined. He should just resign this position

Will bet that Northam inevitably resigns - and announces he is now a proud member of the Republican Party, because that is the party of integrity, not like those nasty Democrats.

And the GOP will embrace him enthusiastically.

Hey stupid, the media didn't do random searches into Kavanaugh's past. Stuff was dug up because he was a SC nominee. Nothing different then anyone else. BTW - How did Neil Gorsuch manage to avoid the "fake media" stories when he went to the same school as Kavanaugh?

Lifetime appointments to the SCOTUS are necessarily subject to greater scrutiny than the election of a term limited Governor in a single state.

I'm terribly sorry if that doesn't mesh well with your usual right wing persecution complex.

Did you catch the part where a reporter asked him can he still moonwalk? Northam acted like he was considering demonstrating he can until his wife stepped in. He's an idiot

Wow. He was totally Frankened, but I don't see how he could get away with this. There's still a certain kind of Democrat you can find in the South...the kind who had all the trappings of a white privileged Southern upbringing before changing their tune on racial inequality.

I am curious to know who is gunning for him...I.e. why is this coming out now? If this was GOP leaking this shit, I'm inclined to think they'd only do that during an election cycle. Wouldn't put it past a Democrat to purge one of their own in the off season though.

The pro-life movement.

How is this not obvious? Two days after he goes on a radio program to discuss the Virginia abortion bill and BAM... the hammer falls.

Comparing the reaction of liberals to this with the disgusting reaction of conservatives to Kavanaugh tells you everything you need to know.

Reportedly he is referred in the yearbook with the nickname "Coonman".

Who even edited this yearbook and thought this was ok?

Umm, what? 1984. A year after Lando blew up the second Death Star in ROTJ.

I've never heard of "coonman" being used as a racial slur or as a nickname or anything else and I've lived in the South all of my life. I can't find it on the interweb except for the recent Northam issue. There could have been a couple of legit possibilities. He grew up on a farm and raccoon hunting at night was/is popular in rural areas. His high school graduating class was mostly B/AA. Some of his classmates at medical school could have used either one of those to give him a "negative"/joke nickname in the yearbook. It may be something he had never heard anyone say to him before and dismissed it and forgot about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Northam
Northam graduated from Onancock High School, where his class was predominately African American.[10]

I can't explain the racist pictures. Wouldn't he supply pictures and control which pictures go on his yearbook page? If so, he would have known about it and approved it. Black face and KKK costumes were still racist in 1984.

I'm with some of the others, If nothing else comes up to support he is a racist then I would give him the benefit of the doubt especially if he has a political record that says otherwise. He did vote for GW twice but said he was apolitical.

Either way, the MSM like NYT, WaPo, etc. and especially left leaning news will not dig too deep into this issue. They will just report the basics in a neutral manner. It will be interesting to see what Rachel Maddow says about it. If he was a repub/conservative the MSM would be sending reporters to his home town and medical school to get at the "truth", amirite?

A tip from a ‘concerned citizen’ helps a reporter land the scoop of a lifetime
The reporter who exposed Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s racist yearbook photo said a “concerned citizen” led him to the story that has prompted widespread outrage and calls for the Democrat’s resignation.

Patrick Howley, editor in chief of the website Big League Politics, first reported Friday the existence of a photo on Northam’s page of his medical-school yearbook depicting a figure in blackface standing next to another person in a Ku Klux Klan hood.

“It’s very easy to explain,” Howley, 29, said in an interview on Saturday. “A concerned citizen, not a political opponent, came to us and pointed this out. I was very offended [by the photo] because I don’t like racism.”

The tip came after Northam’s comments on Wednesday about late-term abortions, he said. Howley declined to give any further information about his source, citing a confidentiality agreement. But he said it took him just a few hours to confirm that the photo was authentic.

Big League Politics is a far right website. Deep State baby...
EXCLUSIVE: Roger Stone Names CNN Journalist Who He Suspects Tipped Network Off to Raid
“I think Josh Campbell of CNN, who’s a former special assistant to James Comey, and I think he should be questioned under oath by the Senate Judiciary Committee to find out how it is possible, because we now know that CNN’s truck arrived roughly 30 minutes before the FBI strike force,” Stone said. “I’m hopeful that Senator Graham will get to the bottom of that, because since they were executing a search warrant, the leak of that search warrant in advance violates the law.”

My biggest problem with this incident is that Northam has shown himself to be incompetent. There are ways to seek forgiveness for having been young, foolish, sheltered & naive, ways the People of Virginia would likely accept. The way he's handling this shows us that's he's still foolish.
