Also helps that VA got/gets a lot of cash from the Fed as well. Other cuts were put into plan/motion before he took office.
That and he is not funding pensions. i.e. using the CC to pay the bills.
"McDonnell also recommended reducing payments to the state pension system by $786 million."

<-- N.VA :)

What? Cut spending? That's downright irresponsible and unamerican! How dare he! The government should always continue it's spending spree, no matter what.

I love how idiots think he is "cutting the fat" when in fact he is just raiding the pension fund to balance the budget...

State will dip into pension fund
http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2010/mar/15/vrss15_20100314-222207-ar-10473/

Virginia has to pay back the $620 million that legislators withheld from the fund this year in order to balance the budget
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/local-opinions/2010/07/virginia_pension_officials_ass.html

Funny how it will not have to be paid till around the time of the next Gov of VA takes office.
I guess if Reagan looks good for using the CC to make things look good; McDonnel will look good for using someone elses money to make things look ok.

Ah, yes. He's taking the Illinois approach. We have just been doing it longer and under both Republicans and Democrats. We're flat broke.

Did you even read your own link?

"Former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine left a budget plan that overcame a $4.2 billion shortfall through $2.3 billion in cuts and a repeal of the state car tax relief subsidy to localities that totals $1.9 billion over two years."

That and McDonnels biggest fix was not paying and on top of that raiding the state pension fund. Don;t worry, it does not have to be paid back till the next Gov takes charge.

the shortfall was estimated at $2.2 billion and they are deffering payment as well as restructuring government pensions were new employees will now have to pay a portion of there pension as well as reducing benefits. I would say all good things when it comes to reducing the size of gubment.

not enough cheeze for ya?

"But McDonnell and fellow Republicans rejected the car tax plan and an offsetting income tax surcharge Kaine proposed."

So you agree, McDonnel is NOT cutting the fat, just pushing the bill down the road to another Gov.
And paying 1-2 Percent of a retirment plan is not going to help at all. Like pissing in the ocean.

I can tell you that its much, much better to raid the pension fund than to raise taxes. I mean, look at Illinois's pension system and Social Security. Awesome.

The car relief was a small part, AGAIN you own link says cuts. Yet you think McDonnel is "cutting the fat" when he raids the pension fund. How do you think that will be paid for? Debt today is just tax money tomorrow.

I would say this is "cutting the fat"

OVERVIEW
Education cuts, statewide
$225 million from restoring base funding for public schools to 2008 level.
$130 million cut from support for supplemental salaries such as coaches and department chairs.
$92 million from eliminating Lottery support for some education programs.
$32 million cut for lease and rental support
$30 million in travel funding cut.
$$19 million saved by extending the useful life of school buses from 12 years to 15.

Other cuts, highlights
$611 million in retirement system savings, particularly requiring new hires to pay part of their retirement plan contributions.
$180 million from five furloughs annually for most state employees.
$82 million spent to give employees a 3 percent bonus in December 2011.
$63 million in cuts to consumer-directed Medicaid services.
$53 million saved by tightening eligibility for Medicaid long-term care.
$50 million reduction in aid to localities.
$34 million cut by freezing enrollment in FAMIS, a children’s health insurance program.
$28 million in cuts to Medicaid provider reimbursements.
$6 million in reduced funding for homeless programs.

the unfunded pension is a part of the package. and now with a surplus $400M surplus that 611M pension doesn't look so bad. we shouldn't have any problem paying it back should we?

fat cut - check
reorg of bloated pension - check
surplus - check

I'd say pretty good!

How so, bolded.

And thanks for backing up my statement. The biggest "fix" to the budget gap was raiding the pension fund. I guess you left that off by accidnet... right.

Only way to reduce government is to starve it. This forces hard changes.
Isn't easy but it is the only way. We are seeing it first hand.

In good times no one wants to make decisions that will rock the boat.

How is he making "hard changes"? All he is doing is raiding the pension fund and delaying paying back till the next Gov takes over.
Sounds like a coward dumping his job to the next person to me.

The biggest "fix" that happened to the budget gap in VA was from the 700million that VA got in stimulus payments from the Fed and McDonnell raiding the pension fund.

All McDonnell did was pass the buck down the road like a coward that could not make real hard changes in the system.

Dude, fucking drop your love affair with the pension... Ohhh I get it now. It's because you're a state gov employee and it affects you. Boohoo.
Yes he is so cowardly for cutting a benefit to employees.
Guess what, You should rely on your company/gov providing for you when you retire. You need to control that yourself.
Gove employees have been riding the gravy train for quite some time now. Now it's time for a reality check for them.

Seems you and fish boy like to make ASSumptions that are not true. I am not a State employee and my retirement plans is largly based on me getting a 5% match, I put in 6% though.

Also he did not cut any retirement program or make any hugh changes. All he did was raid the pension and agree that it should be paid back… after he leaves office.

Again; McDonnell is a coward that could not make any real changes and passed the buck to the next person.

What will you be saying when he increases taxes to fund more welfare and increased Social Security?
