You have got to be kidding me. Do these people think they are going to be locked in their houses for a week?

Edit - just read the article.... apparently this is exactly what they are thinking...

The local Nitwitness News stations have to be seen to be believed when it comes to hyping snow storms. They begin about a week before the event building to a crescendo of panicked 24x7 "Snow Watch" coverage where they pledge to not leave us and deliver us those vital up to the second reports on the snow depth, the inevitable Metro stops running reports and the ever popular live shot segments of the beat reporters standing by the side of a major highway making snowballs, giving us visual demonstrations of the snow depth, and the occasional snow angel.

They do the same shit here when it rains except there's no run on the supermarkets...

It happens. I remember a really bad storm where the roads were completely impassable for 5-6 days. But if you don't have a few weeks worth of non-pershible food in your house you're not too bright.

What the fuck is wrong with people? At WORST they'll be snowed-in for 2-3 days. Do people really not have enough food in their house for 6-9 meals?

Reminds me of the fatties from Wall-E. These people are utterly helpless born of stupidity.

No kidding. It never snows here but we probably have enough food in our house for the 3 of us to survive for a week or so.

I was stuck in my apartment after a bad snow for 3-4 days. It really depends on how fast the plow trucks can get to your area and lemme tell you, Oregon is not so good when it comes to that.

Wow, you must live in a perfect world, don't you?

It is going to be a mess. The state has no money to clear the roads, so if there is 2 feet of snow, most people aren't going anywhere unless it's an emergency because the roads will not be cleared.
There are still many many streets that haven't been cleared from last weeks snow. Even some of the main streets aren't completely clear - there are still 5' piles of snow blocking some turning lanes and snow piled up on the sides and medians of the roads making the lanes narrower, not to mention icier considering it was 40 yesterday so it melted a tad and will start to freeze now.

I went to Safeway this morning before work to pick up some things. It was already VERY crowded (Arlington, VA) and pretty picked over.

I needed beer to last me a couple of days. Is that so wrong?

My wife is driving home right now, she works south of here. Said nothing is sticking to the roads and visibility is still fine. I'm sure its going to get bad, but its fine right now.

What part of the state is this? I'm in Arlington and the county clears the roads pretty well. Over the weekends, they don't get to it right away, probably so they don't pay as much OT - but on a weekday morning they are out there and we have clear roads in time for work.

Ironically, the walking path I take to the metro is the worst part of the commute.

I went to the grocery store to stock up for the weekend (I'm at Virginia Tech) ... and just ended up buying cereal and beer (sidenote: the meat section was pretty much completely gone :p).

Sam Adams Noble Pils & Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale ;)

Who needs milk for your cereal when you've got beer!

Again, it's only going to be bad for a couple of days. I would imagine that by some point on Monday the roads will be clear enough to get around, albeit slowly. The roads in Philly were ATROCIOUS the last time it snowed because there was no money to clear them. They still got clear enough by the next day that people could get around slowly. By no means would anyone have been stuck in their homes for more 2-3 days, max.

Is that so?
Despite having exhausted their snow budgets for the season, local transportation authorities say they'll keep plows running and salt spreading regardless of the cost.
I'm in maryland but my experience is similar to sjwaste. The roads are handled pretty well while sidewalks are ignored. This leads to a ton of people walking in the street, or at least it did during the December snow.

It depends on how cold it stays because the roads will not be plowed. Sure, if it is 60 and sunny on Sunday, the roads will clear up some. Otherwise, no, the roads won't be touched. But perhaps since they declared it an emergency that means they can release some money to get them cleared. I'm guessing that's why they did it.

I was at Ft. Sill for basic training back in the early 90s and while we were out in the field on bivouac there was a weather emergency. They pulled us in from the field; everyone seemed to be in a panic. There was a light dusting of snow on the ground. Half an inch, tops. I couldn't believe how southerners freak out about silly weather conditions. In MN we need to get a foot of snow before anybody even bats an eyelash, and even then people just go about their daily business, pushing through the snow and slush, It would take one hell of a serious blizzard to actually panic people and make them clean out the store shelves.

Edit: I see now that they are actually getting quite a bit of snow. Still, the panic seems to be a bit much.

They said that last time, too, and nothing was taken care of.
Empty promises... unless the fact that declaring an emergency actually provides them with money to clear the roads.
