*MUST* we return them, or is there an alternative?
(This was a (potential) hot deal many of us got into some time ago, with nearly free internet appliances, but with heavy restrictions).
As this plays out, perhaps there will develope an alternative so we can keep these.
They wouldn't want them returned unless they could be reconfigured.... If we can keep these, then we can finally iO these puppies!!

<< Thank you for your continued interest in the Webplayer. We're very sorryto inform you that the Webplayer and Internet service offer is being discontinued effective 11/15/00...we would like to offer you a $25 gift certificate to our preferred retailer, Virginmega.com...you are no longer bound by the terms of the Member Agreement. We will sendyou a letter via US mail within the next 7-10 business days that includes instructions for returning your Webplayer and a prepaid UPS shipping label,so you can return the device free of charge. >>

MODS: please let this post remain since this may yet again develope into a hot deal if we can get Virgin to allow us to keep these some way or another.

edit: you do NOT have to return your WebPlayer, and you will NOT be charged :)

We should probably look throught he member agreement and check the details. It looks like they want it back, but since they are breaking the agreement, we may be able to get around it.

Double check the Members Agreement. The quote states "you are no longer bound by the terms of the Member Agreement". If the return requirement is in the Members Agreement, you should no longer be bound to return it.

Keep an eye on your credit card none the less though. ;)

check out this link for a discussion.

Note the letter says that you are no longer bound by the terms of the member agreement. This means you should not have to return it. Also note some of the wording in the letter, They do not insist you return the webplayer, rather they try to bribe you with a GC. Also the reinforce the fact that you can't use it with another service so that seems to make it look like they are trying to convince you to return it.

But you know what....I may return it just to get the $25. Actually reading the email again it does not say you have to return it to get the GC. Hmmmm....

<< will terminate your charter membership and shut down the service as of midnight 11/15/00. Effective as of that date, you are no longer bound by the terms of the Member Agreement. >>

If we wait until 11/16, we are no longer bound by terms.....
I wonder what these will go for on e*bay? (not selling mine!)

I've heard a lot of talk about hacking the webplayer, but not very much doing.

Does anyone know how to get this box to a) surf via another (free) isp and/or b) get the bios to recognize (and hence boot from) a harddrive or sandisk?

Unlike the iOpener, the WebPlayer was mostly untouched by wouldbe hackers because of the tight TOS.
However, the hack process has begun.
Also, look inside.

The $25 GC is pretty amusing.... I called to find out about it, and they tell you to go to www.virginmega.com and place an order, then pick "Pay by Check" for the payment option. You call them back with the order number, and they take $25 off of that order. If your order is more than $25, they'll take a CC to pay the balance. However, they didn't do anything to verify that i was entitled to the GC. (Then I said something that other people didn't like, so I edited it out. Sit quietly for a moment and you'll figure out what used to be here.)

Their webpage is very clear that you will not be charged anything if you do not return the webplayer. You are no longer bound by the terms of the agreement, and the player is yours to keep for free now.

I am truly bummed out by the fact that I have been using the access for nearly a year now through my Windows dialup networking to have free dialup access on my regular PC, and that will now be gone.

If anyone figures out how to hack this for use as an MP3 player, or whatever, please let us know.

On a further note, does anyone want to buy my Webplayer? I don't have the time or the skills to pursue the modifications that may become possible with it. Lemme know.... Make me an offer.... One thing that I would do is trade it for any Celeron PPGA processor (I want to put together a Book PC system, and that's the only part I don't have...)

Thanks to everyone that expressed interest. I've got a tentative deal with someone to trade my Webplayer.
