lol...great idea, but their plan wont work, i mean who thinks in advance that they are going to drunk dial...if you could think that far in advance you would just erase the number from you phone or not bring the phone...

at least people are thinking about it though :)

Cell phone hangs up on drunken dialers
Last modified: November 30, 2004, 8:20 PM PST

Special to CNET News.com

Ever woken up one morning with a raging hangover that was promptly worsened by the memory of the drunken cell phone call to the ex at 3 a.m.?

If the memory is not painful enough, the aftermath--potentially involving apologies, restraining orders, a "friendly visit" from the ex's new partner (who is probably either a black belt in Zen Do Kai or a leading underworld figure) and sundry other humiliations--adds to the agony.

Amid the flurry of capped plans, bundling and discounting characterizing the pre-Christmas mobile marketplace, Australia's Virgin Mobile has sought to differentiate itself with a service tailored to help people avoid making those embarrassing drunken calls.

A survey of 409 people by Virgin Mobile, a joint venture of The Virgin Group and Optus, found 95 percent made drunken phone calls. Of those calls, 30 percent were to ex-partners, 19 percent to current partners, and 36 percent to other people, including their bosses.

The company said that, beginning Wednesday, Virgin Mobile customers could dial 333 plus a phone number they don't want to call when drunk. Virgin Mobile would--for a 25-cent fee--stop all calls to that number by blacklisting it until 6 a.m. the following day.

The move comes amid an intensifying price war between mobile players to secure customers, exemplified Tuesday by a flurry of announcements. Virgin is launching a new AU$45 (about $35) monthly cap that includes up to AU$200 (about $155) worth of mobile services, while rival Vodafone also launched a new AU$49 (about $38) cap that would allow customers to use up to AU$230 (about $178) worth of services.

For its part, Optus touted a service allowing its customers to call overseas on their mobiles for the cost of a local call.

what a fsking stupid idea

next thing you know, for 25 cents a night, you'll be able to get an annoying 12 year old to keep you from driving home drunk

FuseTalk hasn't ever had a requirement on auto-parsing link length. Within the last few weeks, the script that you use to link (click the "http" button at the top of your reply window) has been borking people's links once in a while. It's not people, it's friggin FT.

Of those calls, 30 percent were to ex-partners, 19 percent to current partners, and 36 percent to other people, including their bosses.

So, if you have an ex-, your friend/s, etc., you can pre-program their numbers not to call you until after 6AM.

Hey, I have a better and cheaper solution to this! TURN OF YOUR BLOODY MOBILE PHONE when you sleep! :p

I can't believe I misread it... The reality (as clarified by you) is even WORSE!

The company said that, beginning Wednesday, Virgin Mobile customers could dial 333 plus a phone number they don't want to call when drunk. Virgin Mobile would--for a 25-cent fee--stop all calls to that number by blacklisting it until 6 a.m. the following day.

My solution is still cheaper.. Turn off your mobile or "lose" it for the evening. ;)

The somantics are brilliant: pay us for our phone service and as a bonus "feature" you can pay us more to prevent you from using the service that you paid money to use.

I do like the idea of responsibly planning to be drunk and irresponsible. - "I'm gonna get so sh!tfaced tonight that I'll probably call _ _ _ _ and say something stupid. Better prevent that right now."

Haha, trust me, you don't want to be there. Every time I go out, it's a crap shoot on who's going to get the 4 AM call. It ranges from Ex's, to friend's....no one is safe.

Whoa...those Aussies must be pretty heavy drinkers. I know a lot of people get drunk, but 95%!!

I think it's a silly idea, myself. A better solution is just to not have a cellphone at all...works for me, anyway. Besides, that way you don't piss people off when it goes off in class/at the movies/while you're driving/when you're drunk

I once called my boss's work voicemail at 3 am and explained that a buddy and I had found a great candidate for a web programmer opening we had.

I then proceeded to put an adult porn / "web mistress" that we ran into in a bar on the phone and she listed off her "credentials" for him.

I think the call closed with "we have to hire this girl, and the best thing is, she can put both feet behind her head while balanced on a bar stool!!"

...

Boss thought it was hilarious. He left me a voicemail back suggesting we bring her in for an interview since she sounded highly qualified from her websites. (she had to spell out the URLs because they were filled with double-meanings...)

lol, I do this already, Every one in my phone who I know I don't want to call drunk I edit their phone number on my phone and place a 4 before the number and save the number. So when I try and call them the I get a invalid number error from my cell service. so when I'm too drunk to know better than calling my ex I'm also too drunk to edit her phone number in my cell and remove the 4 in her profile before I try and call her. As for my friends...yea they get anonyed when I call them at 2am but it's more funny than anything else.

Virgin has to fund their space ship somehow...I guess this is the first of many "we need money fast" schemes.
