Virgin Networking protocol question

I'm about to set up a small network for the first time tomorrow, a lil ansy ;D Anyway, I have 2 NICs, 2 patch cables, and a hub. I read up on AT's FAQ about networking and setting up a basic one - it listed 3 protocols: TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and IPX/PX. I would presumably be using NetBEUI as my default, right? It's only a 2 computer network. I don't plan on playing games - just mostly file sharing. (No net sharing either - only 56k) And NetBEUI needs to be bound/shared with the Client for Microsoft Network right?

(I have a crossover cable also but you would have to deal with IPs and all that if you connected them directly, right? I figure I should start slow and easy first and work my way up once I actually know a little bit more about what I'm doing)

Thanks for any help!

Netbeui is fine if you're not gonna connect to the internet. TCP/IP and NetB will be fine for internet sharing. Are you using a simple hub instead of a switch or router? A switched router is ideal but a hub will work fine for only a few pc's. Install file and printer sharing on both PC's, (I'm assuming win98?) Make sure the WORKGROUP name is the same. Assign static IP's making sure subnet is identical, (255.255.255.0) reboot and you should be good to go.

Oh, you'll also have to actually create and share or share an existing folder, (right click>properties>sharing). Have fun ragingbitch! LOL ;)

NetBEUI is essentially obsolete. While it still works okay for small networks, there are simply no real reasons to use it.

Stick w/ TCP/IP (and NetBIOS).

Hey there,

Sorry I forgot to include more info. One computer is Win95OSR2, one is Win98se. Since NetBEUI is "obsolete", is there anything else special I have to know if I use TCP/IP? Oh - I'm using a Linksys 5 port HUB

I would stick with NetBeui at first. Since you are not trying to share the Internet, NetBeui will work fine. You also do not have to deal with any network address conflicts since NetBeui just uses the Computer Name as the network address(Making the workgroups the same makes things easier too). Also, NetBeui will be a little faster transfering files across the network since it has less overhead compared to TCP/IP. You can use a crossover cable regardless of the Network protocol being used. The cable it just the physical connection between the 2 computers much like 2 computers connected through a switch/hub. It operates independently of the network protocol being used. As for a switch or a hub, a hub will be fine for 2 computers. A switch will be a little faster since it can operate in full-duplex while a hub can only do half-duplex.

Although I believe that netbeui is awefull for networking I agree, with only 2 computers it makes allowing the 2 computers to "see" eachother very easy.
Than like Rhi said, make sure they are on the same "workgroup" and than just share the folders you want to!
