virgin mobile: do I have to buy one of their phones?

I'm thinking of getting virgin mobile. do only the phones they sell work with their service, or can I buy any cdma phone and activate it?

I asked online and they only support their Kyocera line. website

By the way, I am really happy with my phone. I got free after rebate through Amazon and I've spent only $80 since August (with about $8 still on the balance). It suits me for my needs.

Also, the coverage has been astounding. I have been to the mountains in Utah (Park City) and New York (Lake Placid) and points in between. The only coverage drop was on I-77 in WV on the deathpike (WV Turnpike) and that was only in a 10 mile stretch of road.

heh, *they* claim it only works with kyocera. I'm wondering if anybody has gotten a non-kyocera phone working with it. I can't see any technical reason that they should be limited to kyoceras
