Viral Marketing

IN MEMORIAM

Around the web recently, there have been a number of articles about viral marketing and the general impression they give is that this approach is sleazy verging on criminal.

My opinion is that marketers have merely begun to implement the targeted advertising they have been talking about for years. I know the thought of some fan boy for hire hyping a product or service in forums is distasteful to tech forum denizens like myself who search forums for useful information about those products and services but, consider.

The people who actively use tech forums for research, fun and, to lend a helping hand are not going to be lured into purchasing a product or service without extensive research. The people who will be influenced by these viral marketing tactics are the same people who open the Sunday paper and think they?ve found a ?Gonga? deal at their local CC, BB or, Fry?s on a product they either don?t need or is incompatible with their system.

IMHO, the use of viral marketing in forums is less annoying than telephone marketing/political announcements, which have caused me to no longer answer my landline.

Facts, scientific reviews and, reproducible tests are what impress me. Viral marketing has the same effect as Sunday circulars but is easier to dispose of.

Pretty much. Unless it's cheap enough for an impulse buy at the time, advertising is good for getting the name out there, but no more.

Marketers shouldn't Market secretly. On many Forums people ask for Advice/Help, Viral Marketers are unreliable for this piurpose, but they pose as just anyone else so one can't know if they are being Helped or Marketed to. They are sleazy, not quite criminal though.

Want to see some in action? Go over to the other Anandtech forums and search for stuff about the Killer NIC and check how many new posters are making threads asking about it.

If you are talking about people posting comments in blogs and such that are "pro" for whoever they are working for without regards to reality then it is sleazy and perhaps the FTC should look into creating rules against it without some kind of disclaimer.

I know of one financial scam web site that goes around posting in threads about it how is really works "I tried blahblah's programs and made a lot of money, I was amazed it worked, but I am glad I gave it a try" etc.

BTW: have you tried ProfJohn's new spray on cologne? Not only does it make you smarter, but chicks will throw themselves at you, worked for me.

That seems like a really poor marketing compagian. It seems like a really bad Idea to post "reviews" of a product in a form where the truth is going to be one post down. They would have been better off just bribing the likes of HardOPC and IGN to post go reviews.
