Hi,

I just bought a Diamond Viper II and know that it can do hardware dvd decoding... what setup do I use to get this to work?

The hardware decoding is motion compensation which is supported by the triumverate of software decoders, namely: PowerDVD (recommended), WinDVD, Cinemaster (DVD Genie needed with this one for optimum configuration). Hardware assist must be enabled in their configs. They can be found via dvd.da.ru. Drivers for the Savage via sdn.fgn.com

By simply having the card installed and running PowerDVD, will decoding be done through hardware automatically?

Like I sez, in the PDVD Config Video tab enable the Use Hardware Accelerator checkbox to use MC. If it is greyed out then the AGP must not be enabled or setup correctly. Running CPUID (google search for it) will tell you whether it is enabled. The VII has hardware jumpers for 1x/2x or 4x plus the mainboard's BIOS and DirectX have more settings. Besides the hardware acceleration, all the advanced scaling and whatnot is done automagically. The Savage chips do have stunning video quality compared to *cough* lesser designs. The output from the composite and S-Video to TV ain't bad for a common Conexant chip either.
