I have a vip722 from dish, looks amazing on hdmi on my 50" pany in 1080p.

But my bedroom only has a coaxal coming from the box, down from the sat. Is it possible to concert that to hdmi? Getting kind if bored looking at such a low res on my 37" LCD in the bedroom.

that's what I came to the conclusion of. Was hoping there was an affordable converter, but it sounds like there is not.

If I build an HTPC, with 3 HDMI tuners, and get extenders, can I hook up my DISH SAT to it somehow? This might be the wrong area for it.

I don't know if this solves your problem, but this is what I did with the exact same receiver/dilemma:

The two rooms that I share the 722 between were connected, so I hooked up the component out on the receiver to the television right beside the box. Then I ran the HDMI out on the receiver to the TV in the other room via a long HDMI cable. It outputs the HD signal simultaneously on both outputs, so you have to watch the same programming on both televisions (wasn't a problem for us because we rarely watch different things on the two tvs at the same time). I switched the mode to single since I wasn't using the secondary out, which allowed me to do PIP and instant switching between the two tuners on either TV.

You could probably accomplish the same thing with a HDMI splitter, but the setup above did exactly what I wanted.

I read that somewhere as well, but that is not what I want to do. I watch TV in one room sometimes, and the GF will be in the bedroom watching before she goes to bed (weird hours).

Is their a tner card that will alow me to do this? If I got rid of the ViP 722, and got a dumbed down HDMI sat receiver, could I use a 4 tuner HTPC/DVR instead? Or will I still only be stuck to 1, or 2 streams at once? I sometimes run into conflicts, where 3-4 shows are trying to record, and I have to skip one, or two.

The best way to handle this is another DVR from dish. You can get another basic sat box but that will only allow you to record 1 stream . to do 2 streams you will need 2 more boxes at which point you are at the cost of a DVR from dish.

Also to do HDMI recording on the pc you need a specialized card and they are not cheap , average $200. And they will not handle HDCP content so if dish enables it on a broadcast you cannot record it.

What if I built an HTPC with 3-4 tuner cards, and got a dummy Sat receiver from dish, instead of my DVR. So I can stream everything into my HTPC, and watch it from extenders on my TV's? I don't mind spending 100-150 a tuner card if I had to build something nice, and to record 3 shows at once.

You will need 1 sat receiver for every channel you want to record. You can capture SD with most tuner cards but not HD. To get HD recording you will need a card that can capture using HDMI or component. Doing 3 shows at once you may run into hard drive or cpu usage issues . I'm not sure the cards that support HD support multiple card installs.

So setup looks like this:
HD Sat receiver ---> HDMI/Component ----> capture card

You will need that setup for each stream you want to record .

Lowest priced HD capture I could find is this one and it only does 1080i
Avermedia MTVHDDVR - $85

For 1080p you have to pay about $200

My buddy told me they're coming out with a 4 port HD tuner card, but I think it's only for cable? Any idea what it'd cost to get 3 sat receivers, haha?

hdfury will take it down to component and toslink (unencrypted). if you can't figure out what to do from there. and fyi component just as good as hdmi unless you are using stereo rca cables at 20ft lol

I don't think you'll see any HTPC cards that'll tune into satellite programming soon if ever. If you want to watch a different channel with HD programming in the other room you really don't have a choice other than getting another STB currently. Dish is currently working on a Sling device that should work with the 722 receiver that'll give it the ability to Sling HD streams to other devices. Full details on the device can be found here: http://www.slingmedia.com/go/slingbox-700u . No word on a release date or price for the unit yet unfortunately. You'd have to get a device to display on the second HDTV. So while is not an option now its something to keep your eyes peeled for.

That is why I said your best bet is to get another VIP-722 . It will add another 2 streams you can record at once and is guaranteed to work. The VIP-722 cost about $400 shipped + monthly fees, and will be cheaper than anything else you can come up with.

Now that's a viable option! BUT, can you view TV through it, or only what is on the DVR?

EDIT : That 700u only looks like a slingbox set top device. the vip 722 already has sling built in..I can watch from my phone, or the net already. From the description, that device is only used for pc? Unless I am missing something.

Currently the only DVR that supports Sling within the box itself is the 922 and it currently does not send out Sling video in an HD format. There is a Sling catcher box of it of sorts that's in development that will hook up to another TV and allow the 922 to stream HD video to it. It basically works as an HD version of TV2 so you can watch HD programming on one TV and a different channel on the Sling output TV2 with access to all DVR functions. From what I understand what the above device that I linked to for the 722 is essentially turn the 722 into a 922 of sorts in terms of Sling capability. Yes, you can currently hook an external Slingbox to your 722 and you can even link it to that unit but it will only send the output of TV1.

I'll watch that 722 then, looks like the easiest method.

How would I hook up my TV2 in the other room then? Does that let you stream live TV, watch/set DVR, etc?

I thought the 722 could access files from another 722 on the network . I had one when they first came out but later got directv and I know their boxes are set up where all connected boxes can share content.

Well did some research and Dish does not support MRV (multi room viewing). On direct the way it works is the boxes communicate over the same coax that connects them to the sat dish outside so they can share content. You don't need to have a dvr in each room , they can pull content off each other.
In the network area direct has more to offer. They also support watching DVR content on a pc on the network using software.
Maybe consider switching ? New customers get the best deals. You can get 2 DVR from them for $99.

they can copy vip722 to vip722 - directv can play over network.

last time i checked.

the 922 and newer googletv dish products are more l33t.

directv is pretty lame as far as IRD; slooooow.

Only thing worst are comcast boxens. Those are from the 90's bad.

Comcast boxes interface is slow as shit, and even clunkier. I have not heard anything all THAT great about Direct TV's interface. Dish has been aamzing, so I might stick with SD in my other room until I move out, into a house or something.

Comcast at least gives you cablecard and cablecards(tivo3)? not sure the difference. you can turn in your $15 boxen and take two cablecards for $2.50 a month go to town on your soon to be silicondust hdhomerun with cablecard.
