Violent Video Games

I am doing a persuasive essay on violent video games and how they affect people. Im thinking of arguing that while violent video games will make people more aggressive, and will help someone who is planning on a killing spree, so do many sports make you more aggressive, football, wresting; and there are many things that will help someone if they plan on killing people; sharpshooting, hunting, juggling (for the hand eye coordination), reading books, like those by Tom Clany. Violent games do not cause someone to want to kill people, they are already like that.

I am wondering if those of you who play violent games, the most talked about are Quake and Doom, do you think that it has blurred your sense of reality? and do you think stuff like animal torture such as Bonsai Kitten is funny? or are you disgusted by it and the people who do such things should be punished? The site is a hoax i believe, they aren't really doing those things to cats.

Please be honest, this is for my highschool writing class, im not sending it to a newspaper or a magazine to be read by thousands of people.

The site is a hoax, they have a disclaimer somewhere on there.

I do not find it funny to torture animals, to any degree. I think that it indicates a severe lack of respect for life in general.

I have been playing FPS since I was 9 (duke3d and doom) and I'm basicly a pacifist hippi
on the subject of torturing animals, I think that actualy torturing animals is extremely cruel, but in the case of bonsai kitty where it is extremely obvious that people arn't doing that and its just so obsurd that it could be considered funny, then yes, I think it could be funny

I agree with you for the most part, the only thing I could say is that the purpose in most video games is for your personification to kill as quickly and violently as possible, whereas any "aggressive" sports never have that intention. Hunting excluded, but that is on animals and intended for food

Well as soon as the earth is overtaken by giant aliens with sharp pointy teeth and I pull out my BFG and save the world I will let you know if my reality has been blurred

It all depends on the person.

EDIT, what the hell is the thread about anyway? Torturing animals or violent video games?

Concerning Video games, you might say it gives them ideas. When ever I go to a cyber cafe (rarely), its full of 7-10 year olds playing CS. I really dont think those kids should be playing those games at that age. When I was that old, we were outside playing soccer, street hocky or baseball.

I play violent games, played Doom when I was little, now play Quake, UT, Solider of Fortune, RtCW, etc etc. I find that website funny, but only because I know its a hoax. Actually torturing animals makes me sick and any sick bastard who does that should be shot. (see? I dont torture animals; I torture people who do :))

I have to agree with PC Accelerator on this one (when the were around, RIP):
"What kind of a moron would even dare to ask that question? Are games too violent? Give me a frickin' break! It's life that's too violent! If we begin censoring extreme violence out of our games, how will we ever become desensitized to it in real life?

Games teach children and adults alike valuable, if violent, lessons. Don't get shot with a shotgun, don't try to use a rocket launcher in close quarters, and always beware of campers. These are just a few of the things that kids learn from violent video games. If anything, I say games aren't violent enough! I'm not going to be happy until every character in every game is anatomically correct and you can actually target specif orgams in your enemy's body to blow up. I've got news for all you pansy-ass pacifists out there, violence is what made this country great and it's what continues to keep us on top. The day our country loses its bloodlust its the day we find ourselves taking orders from the commies.

America is rapidly becoming a nation of pale, sickly, politically correct wimps. Enough with the blame game already! Everytime someone does something wrong, people point at games, music, and movies, but on fact they always leave out: Most games depict people using violence for good (killing Nazi's, saving the planet, killing co-workers, etc.). So my question (if you can stop hugging that tree long enough to listen, Jason( is this: Why don't people ever give props to games when someone does something positive, like killing a terrorist or saving the planet from flesh-eating zombies? If someone ever tries to take over the world, I think there are going to be a lot of people out there that are glad the "good" gamers of the world know the value of a crotchshot and the proper way to use a flak cannon. It's easy to be a pacifist when you live in a fantasy world where nothing can touch you, buy let me tell you mister, someone has to protect that world. Someone has to pay the ultimate price for your freedom.

There is nothing that irritates me more than getting mobbed by sissy peaceniks begging for protection from ravenous zombies. Without the trained killers of the videogame generation, we'd all be doomed." -Garret Kenyon

Second Person (Below the article)
"I think it's clear that there should be less violence in games because it teaches kids normally too stupid to learn anything in school how to go postal and kill people in the real world. This is like training an army of morons how to use nuclear weapons. Oh wait, the government already does that, but you understand my point. (I don't) We didn't see a lot of these school shootings when kids weren't learning how to do it in games, most likely because they would kill each other experimenting with guns. That's natural selection, and is okay. But this school shooting situation is getting out of hand -- next thing you know we'll lose dear Matt Holmes in a shootout at one of the high schools he cruises. Stop teaching our children how to murder, not for society'ssake, but for the safety of the (former) PCXL staff."
-Jason Samuel

Now on my view of the topic.
I play games to take out anger, not to put it into me. Of course I have learned a ton of things from games too other than guns n' glory. I've learned how to load almost every gun known to man including a mini-gun and rocket launcher. I've learned on how to kill a human instantly is by a head shot. I've also learned some actual benefical things such as nanomachines, good lines, music, and other things. But I have almost never wanted to kill another one of my own species. I mean why would I want to?! Eh I dunno, I'm not making myself too clear but hopefully you get what I'm saying. Games don't kill people, people kill people.

if anything, video games teach you to shoot the bad guys and not shoot the innocents. :p

i have watched very violent and disturbing movies ever since i was 5, played violent games, etc. i do not think torturing animals is funny, because i'm not an idiot.

Im sorry. I was thinking about using a "most people who play violent video games are extremely opposed to animal tortune..."
but after thinking about it i don't think that's a very good argument.

but just about violence in video games. violence is not in itself a bad thing. many people killed another and it was the right thing to do. by killing those who wanted to hurt their family, take their land, etc.
but violence for violence sake alone i think is bad.

no one objects to the violence in Age of Empires. in fact a local highschool has a AoE club that plays it at the school. And many "people" die in that game.
what is different about a FPS? its not the violence, it is how the violence is portrayed. I personally think the violent FPS games are stupid, forget the blood and gore, i care about the tactics and teamwork within the game. Games like Postal, which i have not played, look like they are all about violence, take away torching innocent people and nothing is left.

many people argue that the killers at Columbine used the violent game Quake to learn how to take out people quickly and efficiently. but interestingly enough, the most realistic FPS games, like Rainbow Six, which would teach someone much more about entering a room and taking out people, are probably the least violent, no body parts exploding everywhere, less blood than a game like Quake, or Serious Sam. :)

Probably most people agree that small kids, who are extremely impressionable, should not partake in any violent games or anything else violent. But for someone who can differentiate between reality and entertainment, i see nothing wrong with the games.

any replies? im interested in what you guys have to say.

My question to you Rayden is why did you pick animal torture?

Did you have any other choices in mind? Most people that play violent video games are extremely opposed to (fill in blank)

I had recently looked at the bonsai kitten site so that was fresh in my memory. and to show that most people who play violent games are extremely opposed to violence in real life. and no i didn't have anything else that game-players would be against.

but as i said i don't think it is a very good argument for my essay. I will probably say something like this and let it be, "Most people who play violent games are extremely opposed to any type of violence."

Here is the main idea for my essay. Im not asking someone to grade it, but if you do read it, it is very short, tell me if you see any other arguments i can use, or most especially any arguments against it.
This is not the final version, it is just a summary of what my essay will argue, that is the assignment for the essay this week. next week i write it.

Main Ideas
While violent computer games, really only first-person shooters, do teach someone how to kill better, many other harmless activities do the same. Sharp shooting, juggling (for its hand-eye coordination, hunting, and reading books (many action books that involve violence). And while violent games do make someone more aggressive afterward, so do many sports; football, hockey, wrestling, karate, self defense, and the ultimate arm-wrestling!

Violent games do not teach someone how to handle a weapon. Violent games do not give someone a reason to kill someone else. Many people play violent games and 99% of these people do not commit any crimes. Parents ultimately are responsible for how their child will develop and what games their child plays. If a parent thinks his child will be affected by a violent game it is the parent?s responsibility to not let their child play a game.

Young children should not play violent games, just like they should not watch violent movies, or do anything else violent. This is because they are very impressionable and can?t differentiate between what is real and what is not.
