violence is sometimes necessary (opinion thread)

through this iraqi invasion saga and the ensuing hords of journalism that followed, i have seen a lot of people express the opinion that violence should never be used to solve problems. while i believe that a peaceful solution should always be tried first, when dealing with certain people (internationally and personally), dimplomacy will simply never work. teddy roosevelt may not have been the best president but he said it best: "walk softly, but carry a big stick." always approach with a peaceful solution, but make sure everyone knows you are not afraid to break your foot off in someone's ass.

what do you think? personal experiences?

There is plenty of historical evidence to point out that violence is, in some situations, moraly justified. WWII springs to mind.

That's "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
But I agree. Violence should always be the last resort when peaceful solutions have failed, but there are certain neanderthal characters who only understand one language.

You cannot deal with irrational people in a rational way.

My kids come to mind, that's why every now and then I have to give them a good beating.

Of course there are idiots out there and also in this forum who think everything could be solved by holding hands and chanting that Barney song.

Well I must not be the only one who thinks/thought like that, your Highness. This country has gone to wars before because there was no other way, but then people like Lincoln, Wilson, Roosevelt,... they all must have practiced what you called Nickaleodeon Da-plomacy.

This kind of reminds me on the boycotts they were trying to do saying games now are too violent and bloody...my only gripe with it is if i have a bad day at work, which would you rather me go shooting up to relieve some stress.....other ppl in CS or at the local mall?...

Agreed, but only as a last resort...Cuz of prison time and stuff like that.

Violence is not the answer.

Unless of course the question is one of the following:

Adolph Hitler?
Benito Mussolini?
Slobodan Milosevic?
Saddam Hussein?
Uday Hussein?
Qusay Hussein?
Osama Bin Laden?

One of my favorite sayings:
There is no problem so great that it cannot be solved through the proper application of force.

Corrollary:
If the problem is not solved, you're just not using enough of it.

(Seriously, I agree with the majority of the previous posters in this thread.)

as violence is the last resort, does that imply, that violence would always work? ...i think yes, cause it's always the winner that makes history...
