Vinyl siding

maintenance free, easy to replace pieces. I personally think it is a good choice.

BTW, if you didn't use vinyl, what would you use? Only other thing I can think of that would look nice on a new house would be brick?

From any distance other than close up vinyl and wood are almost impossible to distinguish. Plus wood rots.

Personally, I think using shingling is tacky, and just leaving your cinder block house bare is worse, but vinyl siding is fine.

I hate siding. It can be used tastefully, like the bottom half is brick and the top is siding. However, houses that are 2 stories tall with siding from the ground to the roof and no windows on a side looks really tacky and cheap.

i like vinyl siding. its easy to clean and cheap to fix.

Though if i ever build a house and have lots of money to spend i want a brick house. i like how the new mutli-color brick looks.

Unless by "close up" you mean 50 feet away, I disagree. You can tell the difference pretty easily.

I don't think vinyl looks bad though.

Uh, "Yes, it's cheap looking" or "Yes, it's the way to go"?

either.. looking for opinions... 🙂

He's asking which you're asking in your poll I think, in which case it would be "is it cheap looking" I believe.

It does look "cheap", but can be applied to look like wood. My house was built in the '50s, with redwood drop siding. There is no damn way I'll cover it with cheap vinyl siding. Hell, if you were to price redwood siding today, you'd shlt yourself!

Bottom line is, the devil is in the details. A good installer can do an awesome job with vinyl, but I doubt you'll want to pay the premium.

We just had vinyl siding added to our house this last week. After who knows how many years in the humid, Houston climate the wood paneling was so rotted that in some places you could poke it with a finger and it would crumple and flake off.

One of the main selling points on the house we just bought was that it just had vinyl siding installed. Low maintenance and easy to replace.

Vinyl can look bad...it depends on the style of the house. Usually, I dont like it unless there's a good bit of brick to go along with it too. And I don't like it when it's all...yellowish...eww.

Pics?

There's cheap vinyl siding.
There's cheaply installed vinyl siding.

And, there's the slightly more expensive, well installed vinyl siding.
Go to a vinyl siding place and compare the options. Some things, such as gingerbread on the top look quite a bit nicer than the exact same siding from ground to roof, particularly on taller homes.

I'm still waiting for the day when someone starts making multi-colored siding though (i.e. a striped house.) Everyone seems to just use one color of siding. 😛

CertainTeed has a FiberCement siding that looks like wood grain.

It's what I would do if I could swing it.

As it is, we're putting vinyl on ours in the next couple months.

Here's some details needed to "do it right". The thing that makes vinyl look crappy, is all the J-channel wrapping everything. The thng that makes some installs look REALLY crappy, is poor cuts, poor bends and stapling instead of "hanging" the siding. Extra care means extra time, and nobody wants to pay for that.

I'll track down some more detail links...

Compare vinyl to wood... or, is that wood? If it's vinyl, it's the type of detail I prefer.

I don't want your links, I want your opinion on the specific problems with that siding install.

It's tough to see if the siding is hung properly or not in the pictures.
